My mum's spent a fairly sheltered life up until the last few years (full-time mum, jobs in suprisingly civilised offices before & for a while after). I remember her asking my dad what a wally was after seeing it in an advert & I once got a huge lecture off her for saying 'knackered' (though somebody did tell me that it originally meant tired out from too much sex, rather than for unspecified reasons). She's a little more wordly these days though, can't remember what I said in front of her last time I saw her, but I kind of stopped, with a mortified look on my face, and even then she didn't notice! I was quite shocked that she wasn't!
Hm.. Don't know about being worn out after a good shag, but I always though the word 'Knackered' was derived from 'knacker' as in Knacker's Yard. This dictionary definition seems to back it up!

See that's what I'd always assumed, but then why the 1/2 hour lecture? Possibly a usage thing rather than a derivation thing?
A lovely idea, but she'd only want an explaination, and then if I made one up then next time any of her friends said "wellies" it'd be "You know you shouldn't say that anymore? Sharon told me...".

there used to be a "Devils chord" in music you know - Henglegurt told me all about it....... you could be put to death or something for playing it.... it sounds quite evil.....

Why don't you try that out next rehearsal? Just take enormous offense at a C minor and storm off shouting " I don't believe you just did that! How could you be so crude?"
Problem is our Hengle is a bit of a rebel and fits it into as many songs as possible whilst attempting to pull a demon face - its funny though when he does it........
With his long hair and funny little beard.... and eyes......

Ah ... the Devils chord. A wonderous device which I use frequently ... unbeknounced to the Stead (well until he reads this) I actually use it to summon imps which steal tenners from his wallet and place them into mine ... ah ha ha ha ha
The Devils Chord ... for those who want to know the truth behind it ... is the flattened 5th with no 3rd. The lack of the third removes the chords major or minor identity, it becomes all ambiguous, and the flattened 5th is the 6th note chromatically and is known as the tritone. Ooh, it's all getting a bit technical init. Anyway ... this chord truly does sound evil and is a staple of early Sabbath tunes. In the 16th century it was banned in contempory (at the time, obv) music as they felt it could, and indeed would, summon the Devil himself. Any music that previous contained the dreaded tritone was forbidden from performance. Odd that nobody noticed these tunes HADN'T summoned Satan to bring wrath to the earth ... but there you go .. that's religious fanatics for you.
The evil face while playing the chord is purely optional, however ... when you are as ugly as I am and with such a strong resemblance to "the messiah" ... it does add significant weight to the power of the chord.
