Oblong vs Rectangle

I don't think I need to explain this one.

Not any more.  It's 50-50.  Neck and neck.

In defence of Oblong: It's a nicer word.  It's more fun to say.  Also:

c.1420, from L. oblongus originally "somewhat long," from ob "to, toward" + longus "long" (see long (adj.)).

it's older than rectangle by 150 odd years:

1571, from M.Fr. rectangle, from rect-, comb. form of L. rectus "right" + O.Fr. angle (see angle). M.L. rectangulum meant "a triangle having a right angle" (7c.).

And sounds less like 'rectum' than 'rectangle does'.

That's ok, Stead.  I would have expected you to choose the 'rectum' option.  It's in your nature.

Now, I'm not often one to quote Shakespeare but somehow when reading recent posts "The lady doth protest too much" keeps coming to mind...

I didn't feel it would be appropriate to edit Shakespeare, so had to give the JDK a virtual sex change.
