A new toy

So the notwife and I had a very long weekend, well Saturday travelling to Harwich to pick this lovely bundle of joy up. A bit sad, but I'm so excited that I had to tell someone! Thing is, does anyone know what it is

PS. That isn't the notwife if you're wondering, merely a friend who came along for the fun of it!

You went all the way to Harwich for... some orange straps and a high visibility vest?

If I had to bet - looking at the way the doors appear tightly sealed and there is no air intake on the bonnet (hood) - i would say its a car that can drive in water too?

Well you're nearly there.  It certainly isn't watertight as the doors, windows and windscreen can be removed.

Also don't let the lack of air intakes at the front fool you.  Perhaps the engine is in the back!

Looks like a VW Thing to me.

VW 181 or "Thing"

When I was a kid, a friend mine's dad used to have one.

Stole my thunder ... it's a Thing, clearly, and the engine is in the back.  Germany's WWII answer to the Jeep, dontcha know.  Very popular car in the right circles.  I know I'd love to have one, just because it's so darn different.  I enjoy being peculiar.

Tis indeed a 181, Thing, Trekker.

It is awesome.  We've got the UK MOT on Thursday then we can get it registered in the UK.  Ours must have been some kind of field ambulance or mobile first aid station as we've even got the blue flashing light and klaxons, plus a spare cream bonnet complete with Red Cross.  It runs really well so hopefully it will pass the basic tests.  Needs a new roof and some of the window panels but all in good time.  Anyhow who needs a roof, they're for wimps.

I think my girlfiriend is already preparing a christmas list of thing related goodies now.  It's more her car than mine I must admit.  Still she may be the only Thing driving solicitor in the UK.

Is it just me, or does the 'Thing' in Brian's picture look... bent?

You can get a distant relation to the Thing called the Schwimwagen....

The propeller at the back bolts directly onto the flywheel. That's quite cool. It even floats.
