'Ubiquitous data' the future of digital content, says leading mobile consultant
In less than four years, home PCs and laptops will be redundant as more users and manufacturers migrate to online storage, according to Handheld Learning MD Graham Brown-Martin.
In a bold prediction, he stated: "In 2010 the desktop computer will be dead, and laptops will be on death row.
"I've spent quite a lot of time talking to computer manufacturers and they are seeing more value in selling servers that connect to consumer electronic devices such as the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS. They see this as the food chain, rather than lots of desks with computers on them," said Brown-Martin, during the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival earlier this week.
"We're seeing a situation with lots of devices - consoles, video cameras, mobile computers, phones, pocket PCs - that are potentially all going to access their content from a data warehouse or server," he continued.
"Today you can get 25 gigabytes of online storage for free. We're seeing an emergence of companies saying, 'Pay us a little bit of money per month and dump all your stuff on our online hard-disks, we'll back it up and we guarantee you that you'll never lose your data'."
"Mobility isn't just about little devices – it's about the user being mobile and having all their stuff in one location, in cyberspace, on a hard-disk farm," Brown-Martin went on.
"Where ever you go - assuming that media is scalable and interoperable - you can access material, anywhere and any place – that's where we are headed."
I think this is cool. But... um... not sure if I'm entirely comfortable with someone else looking after all of my por... er personal data.
Ditto.. I think that's a pipe dream... because even if people start to gravitate that way... you know that something huge is gonna happen.. like a major security breach or something.. and everyone's information is stolen and then there's chaos and riots in the streets and all that jazz...
I think its an interesting idea, but I'd never do it.. hell I still prefer my desktop to my laptop... and my desktop won't set my lap on fire..
i agree with you all, i'm a fan of my lappy and when i can afford it, i'll be a huge fan of my desktop too hehe (as in the amazing amazing apple intel tower.. i might have to sell one of my limbs mind you)
i had read that 4 million dell batteries had been recalled.. thanks for reminding me
(actually, i think dells are awesome, i'm just resenting the fact you only pointed it out cause it was apple .. i think the fault lies with sony, the wonderful manufacturer of all the batteries that have recently been recalled)
my only experience with dells has been desktops and they performed great
as for toshibas - that laptop sucked for me, crashed 11 times in the first six months -
sony are in a little trouble methinks - apart from this costing them half a billion dollars - people are already predicting the ps3 is going to lose them money too.. aw bless
That's because they're being arses with it. With the rumours that the x-box is gonna drop it's price for Christmas and the Wii only costing about 170 quid, it has to be pretty bloody spanky to persude people to fork out nearly 500 quid for it! That and they've already admitted that they can't produce enough for demand. Tossers.

Yes, they are. And they shouldn't be... Why are they mucking around with batteries? I just don't get it...
They have great tvs, quality/cheap rack stereos, cool PCs, Play stations... They were supposed to combine all of that into the ultimate interactive household hardware, but no... What are these guys thinking?
Dell desktops are fine, my Sis has one, and other than the fact that she's running Windows ME, the crappest OS ever, it's cracking. Laptops, Latitudes more specifically, are pieces of trash.
Sony make batteries cause they cross industrialise (not sure thats a word). In effect they supply products and components to have multiple income streams. I have to say I have never bought a sony product that was anything less than awesome - but the PS3 is one to wait for the price to come down on!
Dell - in a word - suck (in my view). When I worked as a PC engineer - it was about the time of the blaster virus and broadband coming out. The amount of complaints I got from Dell owners because Dell offered effectively zero after sales care was amazing. I was happy because I made a shed load of cash but I always steer people away from Dell. They just dont care.

Jumping all the way back to the original topic (crazy, I know) ... you know what this "wave of the future" reminds me of? The paperless office. Weren't all offices supposed to be completely paperless by 1995 or something?
Won't happen. People are still attached to the idea of tangible things. Crazy, I know.
I still print out everything for myself too. Like right now I am looking at some code samples, I print them out so I can look at them and my screen at the same time without fussing with minimizing windows. And I can write all over paper to make notes and stuff to myself much easier. Paper is good for some things still.
Now I don't agree with printing paper just to store it in a file cabinet or something, that is just a waste. You should see how much "Computer paper" (green bar line printer stuff) we go through. We do all the batch processing for all departments and they come every morning to pick up their reports just to look them over and store them. Its so dumb and a waste of money, trees, etc. We could just as easily (well almost) email these reports to people.
I think I will getting a Wii as well. When I told my wife I wanted to get a 360, she says "But you already have an XBox".......... She just doen't get it.
Besides since Nintendo makes "fun" games (Colorful bounces shapes and such), she may actually play it. I don't think she is into Halo
Her favorite game is Donkey Kong Country for the SNES.
i have to say, the 360 is pretty amazing (and how often do you hear me saying good things about microsoft ) .. we had an xbox too.. the only time we plug it in is when i fancy a bash at DDR whooo

That's my wife's favorite game, too!
I plan on getting a Wii (if that's what Nintendo's next offering is called) once they drop in price a bit, for the same reasons, more or less. I heard that they're going to make all the old Nintendo, SNES, N64, etc games available for download. That's what got me hooked. I can play Kings of the Beach (NES), Double Dragon 4 (NES), the Mega Man titles (NES), Mario Kart (SNES) ... sounds great!
On another note ... didn't delay the US release so nyah nyah!
