Should lengthy e-mail chains get summarised before forwarding [6 vote(s)]

Yes. Absolutely. No-one should be expected to wade through the crap to find the one or two relevant points

No. Why should I muck about summarising? They can read, can't they?

An e-mail etiquette question

So, I've just been forwarded a chain of about 20 lengthy e-mails by a project manager in 'preparation' for a meeting later today.  When I indicated that I didn't want to read 20 pages of this drivel and that the information contained therein should have been summarised, preferably in bullet points before sending it to me, I was tutted at.  Anyway, I have no intention of reading it prior to the meeting.

So anyway.  Gist of the poll is... should you/do you summarise lengthy e-mail chains before forwarding them on to someone you want to do something for you?

Whenever I have to send someone a lot of information that I think is important that they fully read, I'll bullet point it. Just because I know that when pressed for time and faced with a long paragraph or paragraphs, I tend to just gloss over it to get the jist.

So you and I are in agreement.

I think that this should also be done when sending on stupid forwards from your mates. I do not need to see the entire chain of people that every got this email. If I deem one of those things suitable to send, not only do I strip out everything but the actual content of the email, I BCC whoever I'm sending it to. Nice and clean and no one's email addy's are given out to the world.
