Office move [Another ressurected thread!]

I've just been informed that in 8 weeks, my department will be moving from our glorious 14th floor location (I must emphasise that I have a window seat) in the kickin' centre of town, handy for the buses, trains and shops to...

...a squalid ground floor office at the arse end of Bristol, with a high car crime and burgulary rate (over twice the national average), 25 extra minutes walk from the nearest bus stop that'll get me home.

The upshot of this is that if I continue to use the bus, I will have to leave home 40 minutes earlier to catch a bus that leaves 20 minutes earlier, 20 minutes away from my house to allow for the extra travelling time and, in the evening, will get home half an hour later because I'll have to catch a later bus home!

I can't wait.

Please send your sympathy in the form of cash...

RE: Office move

Uuuughhh.. I feel for you JDK I really do.. I worked for a company that moved its office from a nice high rise in midtown to an old pig slaughterhouse (I'm not kidding) alllll the way downtown.. it added a 25 minute subway ride to my already 1.5 hour commute (used to be able to just take the train in and walk a few blocks and that's 25 minutes actually ON the train... not counting going to the station.. waiting for the subway... then walking from the subway stop to the office) Granted we had more room there, and it was our own.. not shared with someone else.. but it was still a pain in the arse...

I have no money, so that sympathy will have to do.

Oooh.  That's very good.  I think I'll take some of that.  If I invest it, maybe in 50 years I'll be able to afford a mars bar!

Ta, Jackie!

Your commute sounds like it sucked.  Mine's currently only about 40 minutes each way including the walking!  If I can swing a lift, it's about 15 or 20 each way.

It did suck, but I was young, and spritely lol.. if I had to do the same commute now I'd probably have to quit or drink heavily to compensate.

On the plus side though, I did get quite a bit of reading done, and all thigns considered I loved my job. Too bad it was a dotcom and went bust about a year after we moved.

That building was crazy though.. it was one of the older buildings in the neighborhood.. I think the tile on the front said it was 1789 or something like that (I know I know that's like nothing to you guys ).. and as I mentioned before, it was an old pig slaughterhouse. We were on the top floor (5th floor) and while we had an elevator, it was almost a daily occurance that someone would get stuck in it because it would stop moving. When this happened, if you didn't have a cell phone you had to yell up and hope someone heard you. They would go to the roof, and try to jump start it with these two metal sticks that when you clacked together would spark and SOMETIMES that made the elevator move.. at least to another floor so you could get out. On more than one occasion though, we got stuck in there between floors and it wouldn't restart. Someone would climb out the top of the elevator to try to pry the doors above us open, so we could get out. And it never failed, that the more tired you were, the more likely it was that you'd take the elevator down, but it wouldn't work when you wanted to go back up, so you'd have to walk up 5 long flights (it was continuous... just one long staircase up to the top..and the stairs were padded and uneven) and there was a handrail that everyone knew if you really needed it cuz you started to fall, the whole thing would come down with you.. and as there were no landings.. if you started to fall you were going allllllllllllllllllllll the way down to the bottom.

There were so many weird things about that building, and that job, and that experience.. I could talk about it all day lol.. but I won't.

Mine is only 20 minutes door to door St. Louis is just to right size, not so big and trafficy that you have to deal with terrible commutes. I guess it depends on how far away you live. I feel for you JDK.

But did you go and buy a house that was an hour and a quarter away from your office?  Or apply of a job that was an hour and a quarter away from your house?  Only I bought a house that was 40 minutes away from my office because I calculated the fine balance between commuting time and the type of area I wanted to live in.  And now it'll take longer.

That said, my house is on the market as I type, so I'll be moving anyway.

Heh... I think you just did, actually...

Bristol has, perhaps one of the worst designed road systems on the planet.  Take a look at this.  See all those one-way streets in the centre there?  Argh...

All it take is a minor accident to block one lane of one road in the centre or one of the 3 main arteries out of the city and it's practically at a standstill...

Oh no.. that is just the tip of a very large and weird iceburg my dear.. I didn't even tell you about the "models" (read: prostitutes) living on the floor beneath us. (When they finally got evicted we saw no less than 18 BUNK BEDS come out of there..)

Or the weird dude that lit the building owner's jeep on fire outside the building.. and how it turned out it wasn't really the owner's jeep so he just stripped the plates and acted like it never happened and eventually the fire department just started using it to train its members how to rip apart a car...

Or the MC Escheresque "secret" room between the 3rd and 4th floor....

And even THAT'S not the whole story

Jackie, please tell us more!

Darren, guess that's a fair point, I did have the job when I bought the house (the closest place I could afford that had decent dog-walks!).  So where can we nosey at the details of your house?

No, no.  That sounds suspiciously like an entire weeks worth of story telling.  If you start now, you might be finished by the weekend!

Aaaaaaaaaaaand... GO!

Umm...  Sadly, having just checked, my property doesn't appear on their web site.  This is one of a number of issues I intend to raise with them.

Most annoyingly, however, I discovered that, despite carefully instructing them which doors to leave open and which to leave closed for the cat and, despite massive clues in one particular room which included a litter tray, a bowl of food and a water bowl, I returned home after a weekend away to discover that they had decided to close ALL of the doors, leaving poor Rochester with no access to toilet facilities, foor or water for a period of around 24 hours.  Naturally, Rochester demonstrated his displeasure at this by shitting in the middle of the lounge.

I shall be phoning them today to 'discuss' this little problem.  Phrases like 'if this happens again, you will be fired and I will come round and break your legs' may be used.

I moved offices recently, too.

I went from ½ hour walk or 5 minute cab, to a ½ hour (morning) - 1 hour (evening) commute.

It sucks, except I have a new truck!

It used to take me around 90 minutes to get to work on the bus from Wells to Bristol.

Now a 15 minute or less car journey from Wells to Shepton Mallet and I'm done.

JDK are you moving to the Colosseum building or whatever it's called on the waterfront?

Nah.  We used to work there, but moved out about 4 or 5 years ago because it was populated by self important has-beens who kept interrupting us when we were trying to get some actual work done (as opposed to poncing around being generally self important).

Office move [Another ressurected thread!]

Hah.  More thread necromancy!

At the end of next week, I'm going to move from that...

I guess I'm past my prime now!

I still haven't found the thread I'm looking for...

Yeah I noticed that too. I'm not sure what details I was leaving out... it was just full of weird. The guy living in the loft across the street liked to walk around in an open bathrobe and nothing else with his curtains wide open, the time they were doing construction in the building next to ours and a drill bit came through the wall right above my head, getting stuck in the elevator and having to climb out the top and pry the doors on the floor above where we got stuck open to get out so someone could go on the roof and bang two sticks together to jump start it... the parties in the building where the only rule was "No Crack Smoking"....

It was interesting..

No the poo incidents happened when I worked at a bookstore. For about 3 months someone - and it was definitely a someone, and not a something - would leave a huge steaming pile of poo right in front of the door to the storeroom... where all the employees would have to walk in and out. We never did find out who it was. There were also at least two incidents of customers/patrons "Painting" the bathroom with excrement.

Good times.
