Queen's Birthday

It's the queen's official 80th birthday today.  Not sure why, cos she was born in April, but nevertheless, it's her birthday.

Happy Birthday, Liz.

"I'm the Queen, I'll live forever, I'll never die, I'll live to a million!"

Perhaps the secret to living to a million is to keep knocking your birthday back a few months...

So, as she has 2 birthdays a year, does that mean she's only 40 in subject years?  Have to say she's looking a biy rough for 40!

Delighted to see you have so much respect for our glorious monarch there!

Still... it's a good point.

Apparently it's not 'til Saturday, anyway.  Serves me right for not listening to the news properly, huh?

Dont get me started on this bunch of old c*ck.

Did you know they just flogged a load of Princess Margarets stuff for £10m because they didnt want to pay the inheritance tax on her estate out of their own pockets? They said that the official gifts she had been given would be sold for charity but anything bought from her "own" income would be sold for themselves. Presumably her "own" income came from her 40 years of collecting trolleys in the carpark of B&Q?

Oh no thats right she never had a job she just consumed the equivalent weight of Wales in Gin and smokes and then keeled over and pegged it. Nice.

Amazingly I read through that and took the really contentious bits out before hitting submit...

Ok here comes the American Ignorance...

But what exactly does the Queen do other than wave and have huge parties?

/not trying to be a jerk, I just really don't understand the whole thing...

Simply put - tourism and national pride.

England has a looooooooong history and the queen acts as the link to the past (kinda) - making all the castles and history have a point - it pulls in hundreds of millions of £'s for us every year - just by being us!.

Many people over here 'love' her cuz they think they should - but thats about it as I can see it.

That's kind of what I was thinking... but I thought perhaps I was missing something.

I visited you guys for your history too. Though I didn't see the queen anywhere.

You can buy a piece of her at every little souvenier stand in London you know.  Finger nails, hair, the odd digit.  It's ok, they grow back on account of her monarchialness.

If you take a look on the Queen's Website, you will see a list of her many and varied duties, almost all of which consist of smiling and waving.   In particular, may I recommend this page which tells one about a typical day for her majestyness in much, much detail!

Piss taken, I think the queen is cool for many of the same reasons that Stead has mentioned above.  I think I'd rather have a monarchy than a republic.
