Well, for years I thought that the whole point of spending billions of dollars on deep space astronomy was to produce very cool pictures for my desktop.  It turns out, however that this was just an elaborate cover story.  Those crazy scientists were actually just looking for their next drink...



Merlin sees vast alcohol stream
 
Astronomers using the Merlin network of UK radio telescopes have spied a stream of alcohol gas that stretches for 463 million km (288 million miles).

It was seen in the constellation of Cassiopeia, in a region where hot, young stars are forming.

The methanol was relatively easy to spot because of the way its molecules were being excited by infrared light.

Figures that the hot, young stars are the ones with the streams of alcohol.  I guess they need beer goggles to hang around all the old, frumpy stars.
