A Sesame Street DVD aimed at babies as young as six months has sparked anger from groups who believe children under two should not watch any TV...
...the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) says experts have found no evidence that watching TV under the age of two has any benefits.
The CCFC says the American Academy of Pediatrics, which represents children's doctors in the US, has previously said young children should not be put in front of the TV.
"There is no evidence that screen media is beneficial for babies and growing evidence it may be harmful," it said...
...Dr Kyle Pruett, of Yale University ... said that although he was sceptical at first he believed it was better to provide options for parents who wanted to allow their children to watch TV.
"These are the absolute antithesis of park-your-baby-in-front-of-the-TV kind of videos," he said.
"They are thoughtful, informative - it's not a corporate campaign trying to draw kids into TV life."
While I don't think that parents should park their kids in front of the telly, I have fond memories of Sesame Street. As I recall, there was lots of educational stuff in it and it was far superior to the Tellytubbies crap that does the rounds these days!
If you can't be arsed to debate, just vote in the poll thing above.
Elmo makes me homocidal and I've tried my absolute hardest to not let Sean even see an elmo. Unfortunately his diapers have the Seasame Street characters on them, but as of yet he hasn't seemed to notice. My friend's daughter is Elmo obsessed and you can see what the strain of having to hear that voice day in and day out is doing to her poor mother.
While I don't agree that children should just be plopped in front of the TV, truth of the matter is, it happens. Sometimes it's the only thing that will work! I'm not proud of it, but sometimes it's the only thing that will keep Sean in one place so that I can empty the dishwasher, or put away groceries. I put in a Baby Einstein video (If you've never seen these things... its basically the most brilliant way someone could have come up with to make huge piles of money) and he'll stay put for 10 minutes. Anyway, the point I'm making is that it's going to be done, might as well having something interesting and educational for the wee ones to watch.
I watched TV as a kid, and I don't think I'm any worse off for it. TV is not some great evil thing. And I'm tired of people without children or who have enough money to pay someone to raise their children for them , trying to tell me what I should or should not do while raising mine. And I hate alarmist crap like that. Kid stuff is never just "maybe not so great an idea, but probably not so bad..." it's always.. DEADLY! DETRIMENTAL! YOU ARE ABUSING YOUR CHILD IF YOU ALLOW IT! YOUR KID WILL BE STUPID, AND STUNTED, AND HAVE NO FRIENDS AND LIVE IN YOUR BASEMENT FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE AND YOU'LL NEVER GET HIM OUT IF YOU DO XYZ!!!
yeah people telling people how to raise their kids is a silly silly thing.. i can understand medical advice etc (eg. it might be a good idea to get a vaccination).. but when it comes to 'thou shalt not letteth your children eat bread' and crap, people need to climb outta their asses
and i dont even have kids. but i was one. and i turned out ok. ish
