The following Dodgers have been smited by the JDK for their crimes against Jam:
All the girls! for picking on the JDK and damaging his already delicate self esteem!
The Basserd Who Nicked Copper's Stuff For the offense of nicking Copper's stuff. You are a tw*t, whoever you are and we all hope you get run over by a tram in Nottingham. Or Liverpool. Or whereever else they have trams!
Copper For the crime of playing with her Wii instead of her Jammie pals!
With all the guff going on at the moment around water conservation, here are a few facts and figures wot I have garnered for you to impress your friends with:
Uk water usage is 16,800,000,000 litres per day.
According to OFWAT, the water industry is losing 3,609,000,000 litres of water a day through leakage. Sounds pretty appalling at around a 1/5th.
A number of sites I visited suggested that leaving the tap running whilst brushing your teeth (bearing in mind that dentists recommend that you brush for 3-4 minutes a time) uses up to 10 litres of water (same as a loo cistern). Now I reckon that’s with the tap fully on, so it’s a generous estimate.
So. Brushing twice a day uses 20 litres of water. Multiply that by the 60 million people in Britain and you get 1,200,000,000 litres. About a third of the leakage figure.
If a brick in your cistern saves, say a litre of water and everyone goes say, 3 times a day we get 180,000,000 litres, another 1/20th. I saw one site that said ‘if it’s yellow, let it mellow’, which frankly is grim, but would save up to 1,200,000,000 per day.
There you go, boys and girls. I have done your learnin' for you today...
Dazza I think you should send those figures to your MP -
There is NO way I use litres of water every time I brush me teeth and I'm prepared to measure it to prove it. Once again the enviro-nutters are coming after the wrong people - the private individual - when what they should be doing is lobbying industry to sort their act out.
Its much easier to scare some pensioner into turning off the tap or even the heating! than to make industry live up to its responsibilities.
Its the same as recycling - my work building BINS 6000 plastic cups a DAY (no they are not recycled) but I get it in the neck for not sticking a couple of poxy newspapers and baked been cans in the recycling - the world has gone nuts... so there.

a year or two back i stopped leaving the tap on when i was brushing my teeth (i think it was when i was in the usa (where they were paying for water) and my friend was horrified with me).. i guess it was something i never thought of, makes a lot of sense really
every bit helps Stead.. i think that dazza's figures might not be that far off - apart from the peeing 3 times a day thing.. i estimate that to be more like 12 times a day!
I defy any commercial operation to justify 20% of its stock disappearing through negligent wastage (and then passing the responsibility and cost on to the customer) and whilst I dont mind paying for what I use (I have a water meter too KT), it is the impact on the vulnerable that concerns me most. When the eco-doogooders start banging on about not flushing the loo and using less gas - its the vulnerable who are often left in the cold.
Commercial and industrial waste vastly outstrips consumer consumption and we should all ask what our companies are doing to ensure that their eco footprint is small. Its standard problem management really - deal with the 80% cause of the problem first and then worry about the 20% impacts.

Heh.
It should be borne in mind that a good proportion of our water system was cobbled together by the Victorians, who thought that bricks and mortar would be a good way to build water pipes. No regard was given to the fact that the bricks and mortar would erode to uselessness in a couple of hundred years! They also used lead pipes for internal plumbing, which was nice!

Are you sure?
That sounds most unlike you...

Oh yeah. I forgot that 50% of the population were made from colanders!
stead, i didn't know you were so passionate about water!!
i forgot that the englishies have gotten water meters.. here in 'norn 'iron we're still fighting.. in fact some are petitioning against such a thing. i dont mind there being water meters - but we're already paying for it through rates and if they decide to start charging us separately they sure as heck aren't going to reduce those the buggers
What do you English blokes pay monthly for water? In the US, some areas have meters, some don't. Water rates depend largely on where you live. I don't have a meter and pay a flat bill every quarter. It is the cheapest water I have ever had in all the places I have lived. Something like $120/year. It rocks! Some other places I lived have been as much as 4 or 5 times that much. Depending on consumption.
Ahh, those Americans and their little misunderstandings of the complexities of the Queen's English. Bless.
Now, I've just dug out my last water bill. I'm metered, although not everyone is.
For the period of 20/05/05 to 12/11/05, I have a standing charge of £13.09 and a volume charge of £32.34 for the half year, so that'll make roughly £65 for the year. Which equates to about £115 pa. Wow. We've got something that's cheaper! Yay us!
Do you pay separately for sewerage? They charged me £59 for the half year to shift my poo away. I'm not convinced they meter that...
