The 'B' Word vs The 'F' Word (Rude word alert!)

Ok, it's Poll time again!

In response to an issue with the printer, my boss announced loudly to the world in general that "It's b*ggered again!".

Now, because I wanted to wind him up, I took issue with the use of the word 'b*gger' in the office environment.  "You can't say b*gger in the office," I said, knowledgably.

"Rubbish," he said, "Everyone says b*gger.  It's barely even rude."

"Of course it's rude!  It's as rude as you can get!  The verb 'to b*gger' decribes the action of inserting one's willy up someone eles's bum.  In what way is it not rude?  At least 'f*ck' describes a more... er... 'normal' type of penetration."

My boss doesn't believe me that b*ggery is ruder then f*cking.  Let's take a vote!

Sorry dude - with ya boss on this one - modern day usage of B*gger is more mild i guess...

Now 'C*nt' thats an 'orrible word...

Ok.  Let me explain this a slightly different way.

Picture youself, sticking your willy into a lady's whatchamacallit (a bit far-fetched, I know).

Now picture youself sticking your willy into someone's bum (this can be male, female or animal - it's entirely up to you).

Now tell me which one grosses you out more.

Surely bugger is a quintessentially English word. I much prefer to use it in polite conversation as opposed to the f word.

Now there, I agree with you.  I'm not sayin' that we should use it less.  I'm simply sayin' that it's actual meaning is ruder then the meaning of the 'F' word.

So b*ggering there!

'Bollock', by the way is not a rude word but a sailing term.  'Berk', on the other hand is insanely rude.

My friend ahd an Italian funk disco track that simply consisted of the word bollock.

Now I'm not sure that he was singing about sailing though.

Gotta be the f-word, dude. Can't even figure out what would be the matter with using 'bugger' or some variation thereof...

And, to be sure, your, erm, 2nd explanation threw me for a giant loop. What was I supposed to take from that, again?

Which explanation caused you the problem again?

If you'll just bend over I'm sure someone will explain with the use of a large stick!

Essential viewing to gauge which is the most serious of these words would be John's Not Mad and the follow up doc ten years later.

So what you're telling me is that you're happy for your kids to make references to anal penetration, but not vaginal penetration.  tut...

I remember a while ago my wife, who hardly ever swears, hurt herself in the kitchen

and shouted:

"f*ckinb*stardw*nkc**twh*re!"

i was shocked.

Also, b*gger cant be that bad, if you click on the link to more emoticons on this site you get one for "buggered"!

I don't think the meaning has anything to do with the perceived rudeness.  As evidence I would like to present the fact that when I was growing up 'shit' was considered a swear word, 'crap' was not (not that my parents let me say either).

Ok.  So I'm getting the impression that no-one agrees with me at all that anal sex is technically ruder than normal sex.  You're all entitled to your opinions, even if they are wrong ones!

Both sh*t and cr*p were swear words when I was growing up.  Any reference to Number Twos.  So was 'damn'.  And for some reason, so was 'Donkey r*ping sh*t eater'.  Can't think why!

So, can someone explain why different words for the same thing have differing levels of rudeness attached to 'em?  For example, cr*p is not rude, but sh*t is.  Bum isn't, but *rse is (heh heh heh... and americans use the word 'fanny' to mean bum... he he he...)

Social norms, that's all.  The greater questions is why are some words rude at all?  The definition has little to do with it, as you so keenly observed.  Same thing applies to hand gesture.
