Tech Request

So.  I need to network our three home pcs together to allow internet access.  I don't want to drill throught the walls, so have decided on a wireless router.

I have a number of questions that I thought some of you might be able to help me with.

1. Is there a security risk?

2. Do I have to plug it into my USB or can I use another port?

3. Do I need to buy extra dongles for all the pcs, or will the router come with them?

4. Any other tips??

Cheers dodgers!!

1. Is there a security risk?

Yes.  But a decent router should have at least 128 bit encryption on it, so won't really be any riskier than a cable modem for an average home user.  Your main problem is that without the encryption, your neighbours might steal you bandwidth, wittingly or otherwise...

2. Do I have to plug it into my USB or can I use another port?

Nope.  You'll be using the network card... see below.

3. Do I need to buy extra dongles for all the pcs, or will the router come with them?

Yes.  You'll need a network card for each PC (may already have one).  You can get wireless ones, or you can get cheapo ones and stick dongle thingies into 'em.

4. Any other tips?? Cheers dodgers!!

I got a Belkin one.  Seems pretty average, but isn't supported by my ISP which means I'm on my own if (and when) it all goes south.  Best thing to do is have a word with your ISP and see which ones they support/recommend.  They may even supply a home networking kit and phone support or it!

You're gonna encounter problems.  They annoying little basserds.  But when they work, they ROCK!

1. Is there a security risk?

Not if your careful use encyption and if you can handle the headache use an access control list based on the MAC address of each network card (wireless or otherwise) if you open a command prompt, start > rum > type cmd and hit enter.

Then do a ipconfig /all you should see something like this

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Con
troller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-1F-A8-2D-21
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 193.35.31.195
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 193.35.31.254
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.97.0.11
10.97.0.12
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.97.0.11
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 10.97.0.12

Your Mac address for the adapter is listed as Physical Address.

2. Do I have to plug it into my USB or can I use another port?

You said you wanted wireless so if you go for a USB adapter you should be ok, otherwise you need to obtain an rj45 cable for each PC that has a network card or port.

3. Do I need to buy extra dongles for all the pcs, or will the router come with them?

You will need to buy em unless you get one bundled.

4. Any other tips??

check out www.ebuyer.co.uk for good deals.
