Survival of the Unfittest

So, I was thinking, does a welfare state reverse evolution?

Now, don't get me wrong, I am all for a welfare state in principal, I think helping people out when they're down is a basic tenant of a truly civilised society, but... we seem to be heading more & more to a situation where the working classes (by which I mean everyone who works, not just blue collar) will choose to have fewer children than they would maybe like, as they are limited by what they can afford, more of, for want of a better term, the educated are seeing not having children as a viable lifestyle choice & we are left with the dole blaggers breeding like rabbits for more benefits/better housing or simply because they lack that responsibilty that seems to come with actually earning the roof over your head & food on your table.  This is surely going to be pretty detrimental to the gene pool.

Discuss.

I think we should start a ruthless eugenics programme immediately.

You're probably parially right in your assessment of the effect of a welfare state, although you're in imminent danger of sounding like a Daiy Mail reader (although I appreciate you're approaching it as Devils Advocate). There does seem to be a shift toward people choosing welfare sponging as a lifestyle, but I suspect that, due to the media portrayal of the problem rather than actual facts, it would be difficult to assess the extent of that. My gut feeling is tha it's not as bad as we think it is.

Remember this chart?

It seems to show that stuff like housing benefit isn't exactly a large percentage of the budget. I really need to go and look for a more recent one!

By a similar argument to that welfare one, the healthcare system creates the same problem. In order to preserve the purity of the gene pool, we should really allow all those asthmatics and weak, sickly people to die from their ailments rather than treating them.

To quote a wise lady: 'I think helping people when they are down is a basic tenant of a truly civilised society...'. We should let a few spongers let us lose sight of that.

Now stop posting serious, thought provoking stuff and get back to bacon and movies and shit!
