Jury Service

So, am a week & a day into jury service.† It was something I was looking forward to, as I thought it would be quite interesting to see how the whole system works.† Here is a synopsis for you:

Firstly you sit & wait to be called.† This could take between half an hour and 13.5 days.† Imagine being locked in a doctor's waiting room & you'll have a fair idea.
When you are called for a case you will then sit in a court & be lied to by the claimant, the defendant (should they choose to testify), whatever witnesses are called & two lawyers.
The two lawyers will then repeat everything you have just heard.
Next the judge will repeat everything you've just heard.
At this point you adjourn to deliberate.† Should it be straightforward & everyone agree, job done & back to the waiting room, via a quick return to the court, however...† If there is disagreement you firstly agree to disagree & tell the judge as much, he tells you tough, reach a consensus.† You go back in, double check no-one's in any doubt & pass word to the judge.† He again says tough, come to agreement.† This translates to the majority attempting to bully the minority into submission & gets quite personal, stopping just short of fight†& batting.† As part of the minority you feel it's gone beyond the scope of the case & into defending the integrity of the British justice system & refuse to go with the majority, merely for an easy life.† The jury is dismissed & you're left wondering how many verdicts are reached because the minority are not strong enough to resist the mob mentality fostered by the system. spaz

Must read Lord of the Flies one of these days.

Blimey that sounds like a lot of fun - I'll start preparing my list of reasons why I cant do it in the future...

According to the directgov website, you can get out of if with the following:

When you canít be on a jury
There are some situations when you canít be on a jury, including if you have:

ever had a prison or youth custody sentence of more than five years
have been in prison or youth custody for any length of time in the last ten years
have or have had a mental health condition or mental disability

Asking to do jury service at a later date
In some circumstances, you may be able to delay ('defer') your jury service - for example, you have a holiday booked.

You must state the reason on the jury summons form.

You must also state when youíre available for jury service during the next 12 months.

You can only defer jury service once in the next 12 months.

Asking to be excused from jury service
If you can't do jury service at any time during the next 12 months you must state the reason on the form. Youíre normally asked to give evidence - like a letter from your doctor about a medical condition you have.

If you have served on a jury within the previous two years you have a right to be excused.

I was called up during my first year uni exams and had it put off. I've never been called back.

I think Sharon must have it all wrong though, because I've seen loads of trials on the telly and it's like going to the circus with all the theatrics and crying witnesses and shocking revelations and courtroom punch ups and stuff. The telly doesn't lie!

No, no, the theatrics & crying witnesses & shocking revelations are definitely all true & I can well believe the punch ups. Even had an escape the week before me (no, not a juror!). Don't think the telly tends to show the jurors bumping into claimants, defendants & witnesses outside the court though? Or the people sitting by the entrance pointing out who's on a particular jury? That makes you feel very comfortable.

Stead, you'd be great on a jury, they need people who'll not give in to bullying by the majority.

My principles mean that whilst I will in no uncertain terms point out how wrong a fellow juror may be, I will also vehemently defend their right to hold that opinion.

Today was good, not called on to anything new, should probably go & post on the book thread...

I got called about a week after I gave birth to my first kid, so that wasn't happening. All I had to do was tell them that I was his sole care provider and I got an exemption for 2 years. Since I've had a kid pretty much every 2 years since then, I've been in the clear, but I suppose that's not going to work for me much longer (although I did get a summons recently, and told them that when they want me to serve is right around my due date, so they've given me another extension)

I actually WANT to serve... I find the idea kind of interesting, and according to most people I know who have served recently, they've gone a long way to making the process more tolerable. My father has served at least 4 times, and he's gotten some really interesting cases - and he's the hardass who won't go with the majority just because.

Woohoo! Am done! Most happy!
The only downside is apparently I'm so vital at work that I can't take the next two days, when I wasn't expected to be there, as leave :(
