Shuttle catches a plane

Discovery atop the 747 is towed to the MDD

The space shuttle Discovery arrives in Florida on top of a jumbo jet

I saw live footage of the shuttle strapped to the back of a big jumbo jet over the weekend.  It was so cool.

What's the story behind this - was it just transporting it?

They had to land in california because we were having some wicked thunderstorms and such over here. So now the shuttle is taking off from California and landing here. I'll probably be able to watch it come in. Theres talk that it will either land at Nasa itself, Melbourne airport or Patrick Airforce Base... any of them are only a few miles from me. Should be cool to check out.

They said it would take a while to get here though because the shuttle is so heavy, they'll have to stop a few times on the way over.

I am suprised a 747 could even get off the ground with the shuttle on its back.........but I guess if you think about it, C-130's (big military planes) carry tanks and crap, they have to weigh close to what the shuttle weighs.

...............

Ah damn. It landed at NASA and I missed it. Flew it right over my house too. Figures I slept in yesterday and missed the whole thing.

Tis true.

Looks like they watched Blue Peter the night before they flew... They've stuck bits of washing up liquid bottles to the back of the shuttle.  I bet they did it with sticky backed plastic!

I wonder how they smuggled it though customs...

"Excuse me, sir.  Do you have anything to declare?"

"Er... no, Officer."

"Well, can you explain that suspicious shuttle shaped bulge in your pocket, sir?"

"Um...  I'm just pleased to see you..."
