Mooo. Click.

Santa and I got dragged into a debate at the weekend.  I think the answer is so blindingly obvious I am almost ashamed to post this, but seeing as I have spent time finding out the answer I thought I should share.

Which is bigger, the world's population of whales or cows?

Yep. All cattle vs all cetaceans (whales, dolphins etc).

Ok, here is a clue.

If we included all the welshies in the Whales category it wouldn't make a difference.  The answer would be the same.

on the completely pointless notion that there are more oceans than land

more whales than cows? are you mad???

course not, despite the relative size of their habitats whales, unlike cows, are not commercially reared (despite the norwegian and japanese tastes), bound to be more cows than whales - definitely...

so the number of cows on the earth is something like 1.3 billion if we're to believe this site

i havent yet been able to find a total for the whales.. but for humpbacks, the estimate here is 7500

Ok, I can see you are all on the edge of your swivel chairs.

We are talking all cetaceans.  But even taking that into account (and the welsh), cows still come up on top.

Cows: 1,294,604,000

Whales:     2,000,000

the other topical conundrum of current debate is:

in medieval times, which developes on a site first, the market or the castle?

I'm a market man myself, except in certain circumstances - i.e. where a castle is built purely for strategic purposes, i.e. all the castles in Wales built by the English to subjugate the Celts.

I have to go with castle myself - Markets came about once a village had become established as a trading post - which would suggest it was well populated - hence the castle? Presumably as there was a lord of some kind -

Look at blaise castle in Bristol... tiny tiny place...

well done Stead, thats the spirit

Clearly a market is a pre-cursor to a castle as you'd only bother building a castle to protect something, and what would that thing be? - a market of course, so you could levy taxes and stuff.

Market.

Trading has been around since pre-historical times.  Castles have not.  Simple.

What's pre-history got to do with it, Copp?  We're talking medieval trends here. Despite being (probably) right, your logic is flawed.

Its completely dependent on the time I would have thought...

When I went to Hardians wall earlyer this year the castles defently came first there.. I read all about it and I was dragged to lots of exibison centers and such like. It defently said that the roman forts were built then the solders familes built towns around the forts.

But I was probally different in a different time.. zone? (i'm not sure how to word this) Like with knights and stuff!

Rubbish!  Noone specified the critical window for the market/castle construction.  My logic is sound.

(this is in response to D, not you Lite )

No, copp.  You must be right.  Duh.  Silly me.  Oh no!  hang on.  YOU'RE WRONG!!!!  Woohoo!

And you're right, Lite - different time zones.  The Roman period in Britain was 100 - 400 AD (ish - someone can correct me later) whilst the medieval period is generally considered to have begun around 1000 AD... again... a great big ISH there!

Have to agree, a relatively safe bet.
