Spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are cool.  Nate'll tell you.

But did you know that Dan Bricklin, a programmer who invented spreadsheets was born on July 16, 1951?  Apparently they've only been around since 1979.

Yeah that was VisiCalc back in '79. Spreadsheets are older than me!

Wasn't it an Apple only application as well?  Would I be right in thinking that Lotus was the first one for PC.

Heh.  I'm a little bit older than spreadsheets. Only by a few years though...

Is it worth noting that whilst 'spreadsheets' in their electronic format have been around for only a little while - the paper version they emulate, the Profit/loss or purchase ledger design dates back hundreds of years?

I may be a sad sad man after all...

Spreadsheets are cool, indeed.

Yeah, it looks like the original VisiCalc was for Apple-macs. This was a little before I started using them, which would ~1990. The first one I used was Quattro Pro, which compared to Excel, is even crappier than the 'shrug smiley'.

Here's some more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreadsheet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VisiCalc

Later, more powerful clones of VisiCalc were released including SuperCalc, Microsoft's MultiPlan, Borland's Quattro Pro, Lotus 1-2-3, Microsoft Excel, the spreadsheet module of AppleWorks, gnumeric and OpenOffice.org Calc.

Beware the clone wars!!!.

It would appear VisiCalc was released for PCs before then.

Dunno.  A fair number I think.

Personally, I'm not in IT per se, but I do an awful lot of IT stuff in my role.  I'm gonna start a new thread about jobs!
