Dutch biccies

No doubt Stead will start harping on about fatties and fasting and 'training', but has anyone ever tried stroopwaffels?

Yummiest biccies in the world!!  If you ever find yourself in the Netherlands - get some.  My friend just gave me a whole pack.  Yum.

Mmm.  They look pretty good.  Perhaps you could furnish us with a description so that we can imagine the biscuity goodness for ouselves.

Stroopwaffels or Syrup Waffle Cookies:

2 thin, hard rounds of waffle-indented biscuit, wedged together with a kind of dark treacle syrup. They are chewy when you bite them and taste of cinnamon and mixed spice and aren't too sweet. All stroopwaffels are made with 100% roomboter (cream butter)

Serving suggestions:

1. Right out of the package - this is the easiest way to enjoy Stroopwaffels. Once the package is open, these cookies disappear fast!

2. A Winter Warm Up - a gentle warming can really bring out the flavour of the syrup. You can microwave the cookies arranged on a plate for 10 - 15 seconds or use the more traditional method of balancing on top of your hot cocoa or coffee cup and let the heat of your drink warm the syrup.

3. A Summertime treat - make ice cream sandwiches! Use two syrup waffle cookies, spread softened ice cream on one cookie and top with the other. Place in your freezer until ice cream is firm and enjoy!

4. Decorate your desserts - Serve custard, ice cream or pudding with a wedge of Stroopwaffel. On a flat surface, cut a syrup waffle cookies in to quarters with a sharp straight edged knife. Tuck one syrup waffle cookie triangle into each bowl. Delicious!

Fantastic! They sound great!

Here, Copp. If you like, I'll let you send me one in the post! I'll supply my own ice cream, though!

I have eaten three in place of lunch.  Does that make me a bad person?

Oh, and I thoroughly recommend balancing the cute little sugary darlings on top of a cup of coffee.  The syrupy inside bit goes all warm and yummy!

Slurp.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

They are indeed the most fabulous thing!  If you go to Holland they have street stalls where they cook them fresh (those ones are about the size of your aveage pancake too!).  Ooooohhhh, want some now!

Well done the Dutch!

But they're the best thing about the Dutch!  What other good points are there?  Oh, I've just remembered, I know a Dutch person & she makes these fab doughnut-type things, called something like olgen bolgen, that's another good point.

Tiramasu ain't really Dutch, though is it.

I don't know any Dutch people.  I went to Holland for a holiday once.  There were many tulips and at least seven windmills.  A large number of bicycles were in evidence as well.

Worked at a summer school one year & there were some Dutch kids, about 10 or 11 years old, and there English was possibly better than mine - which is somewhat shamefull.

Indeed it's called Oliebollen, meaning something like BALLS OF OIL. Sometimes we also call them Smoutebollen. Don't ask me why... Anyone care for the recipe?

Yeah, that'd be great.  Throw me the recipe and I'll see if I can alter it and make it gluten-free; Hubby was only complaining about not having had a doughnut for a year and a half.

There are a few things I don't know how to say in English, but I think it's clear.

What you need:

75 ml milk (room temperature)
15 grams of gist (don't know the english word, it's the thing that makes something like bread or a cake rise)
200 grams of flour
1 egg
1 coffeespoon of sugar
1/2 coffeespoon salt
100 ml Belgian white beer (very important; preferably white Leffe)
25 grams of melted butter
Oil to fry everything

This is what you do:

- Poor the milk in a dish and mix with the "gist".
- Put the flour through a "zeef" (that thing with little holes to make sure the flour is really powdery)
- Break the egg
- Mix the "eigeel" (yellow part of the egg) with the sugar, the salt and the beer through your previous mixture.
- Whip the rest of the egg and gently fold this under the mixture.
- Cover the dish and let it rise in a warm place untile the volume has doubled.
- Gently "kneed" the mixture (you know, with your hands)
- Heat up the frying oil to 180°C
- Take a small amount of the mixture and fry it for about 1 minute in the oil.
- Take out the "smoutebol"
- Let it drip the oil on some kitchen paper.
- Sprinkle with powder sugar and serve hot.
- Enjoy
