Beware the Escalator?

Ever see these people who are apparently freaked out when they get on an escalator? They stand there and watch 3 or 4 steps go by before they carefully merge on to the moving stairs.

There seems to be a specific demographic that's especially prone to this sort of paranoia!

Then there are people like me that jump on so that my feet are split between two stairs and wait to see which stair I end up on when they split apart and "become stairs". I am such a dork

Erm, I do that too, with my eyes closed! Not fearing the escalator!

I always used to surf the escalator in my building.  It was cool.  One escalator going up about 3 storeys.  And I looked very cool while I was escalator surfing.  Very cool.

I was stuck behind the very kind of person you are talking about the other day coming out of Penn Station - because they had upped our transit system to warning level orange they closed 3 of the escalators so there was only one left going up - and a ginormous line formed (). This woman just could not make herself get on the escalator - you'd see her sort of step forward, then pull her foot back, 3 or 4 times all the while people are getting annoyed behind her. I almost pushed her onto them.

But I'm not that mean.

If she was over 40, there's your demographic.

I'd say that would be a fair estimate

Hi everyone. I'm Amanda and I'm escalatorphobic

Ok, sort of. I don't care about up escalators really, but I will watch a step or two go by on the down escalators before I step on them. I believe this is caused by...

1. My fear of heights.. well, not so much the heights themselves, but more falling to my death from a height

2. When I was a kid, my mother would always yell at me to step off the escalator fast because my shoelaces could get caught and then my feet would get sucked under. (Really... she said it.)

So uh yeah. If I were to ever go on fear factor, they can just forget about the bugs and stuff. Just put me on a down escalator and I'd lose.

Sounds like you need therapy, And.

That's the very least of the things I need therapy for

Heh heh heh.  The major one being your addition to inanity, such as the sort found right here on the bored board.

I have borne witness to And's escalator fear... but at least she does the rest of us a favor and just takes the stairs - she doesn't sit there debating for 20 minutes

Rule? I thought maybe she's breaking the rule, in terms of age, at least...

So, have you ever just pushed her on to an escalator, then, Jackie?

No, I'm not that mean - I just ridicule her mercilessly.

Hmmm I just had a thought - Mandie, when I lived on Roosevelt Island - when you came out of the subway station - did you walk up all those stairs or take the escalator?

To get out of that station it was one short and two very long escalators to get out..it's the deepest subway station in NYC

I wonder how it compares to the London underground.  Some of the stations there seem to be about 12 miles underground.  I must research this later...

Escalator most likely. The up escalators don't bother me.

On the way down I don't remember... but I think I was with Eric at the time and he's a lot nicer about my phobia than you :)
