Nice thing to come home to

I came home last night to a phone call from my neighbor. She is house sitting for some other neighbors who are on vacation for a week. These vacationing neighbors are kinda trashy in my opinion. They keep a rabbit pen in their backyard from which they sell these bunnies for food. This might be ok if on a farm but not in an urban neighborhood of a large metro area. Well anyway this call I got was my neighbor wanting to know what to do with dead bunnies. These people left for the week and left their bunnies in 95+ degree weather (35C for you metric chaps). So yesterday I got to scoop 3 dead rabbits out of their cages with all their little babies still hopping around. Two of the big mommy bunnies were dead (10-12 lb) (4-5 kg) as well as an adolescent. They were stiff as a board too....yuck. Well anyway just thought I would share.

Sounds idyllic, Brian.  Just the sort of neighbours I've always hankered after!  Round here we'd probably call 'em Pikeys.

Then we'd probably quote Snatch, and say something terribly witty like, 'I f*ckin' hate Pikeys!'.

That's really awful :( I don't know what area you're in - but regardless of what animals are being kept for - even if its somethings food supply ( :(:( :( ) you still have to treat them humanely. Around here if I saw something like that I'd be on the phone with the ASPCA and they'd be fined and/or have to serve some sort of prison sentence (most likely a fine - but hey you get what you can). That's just disgusting.

What happened to the baby bunnies?

Yeah pretty nasty, I am not sure about the baby bunnies, the people are supposed to be back tonight but today temperatures are to reach 100 so it may be a foregone conclusion. It will be up to this other neighbor that is house sitting to do what she needs to about the bunnies and owners, she should be home today to look after them. I agree about treating the animals humanely but I don't really want to go pissing on my neighbors. They live right behind me and the husband also works for the same company as I do. I just don't want to get stuck in a sticky situation. I know that sounds bad but it is a reality I would have to live with.

Yeah King, I know what you mean with Pikey's, we have many names for such people

Red Necks
Trash/White Trash
Hicks
Hoosiers - This is an interesting one I did not hear before I moved to St. Louis. Most parts of the country it just means you are from Indiana but in St. Louis it means you are red neck. I don't really get it. And it is nothing against Indiana'ans here.

I attended Indiana University, so technically I'm a Hoosier.

Next time you hear this crap, tell 'em Nate said to 'pound salt'.

Raising bunnies for food?

Poor little buggers.

Most of the time you can call anonymously. At least here. You can just say that you think there's something not right going on with some animals in someone's back yard - could they just come and check. No names given, etc.

I know how you feel about not wanting a sticky situation - I'm just one of those bleeding heart animal lovers and it makes me so farking angry when I hear about crap like that.

True, but as Brian says, these guys live in and adjoining property.  The sort of people who mistreat animals are often also the sort of people who jump to conclusions about who grassed them up and are then the sort of people who will happily make life difficult with the noises and the smells and the paint stripper over the car...

Tough one.  Not sure what I'd do...
