Facebook Username URLs - You in?

So, there is the opportunity from Saturday to claim your name as your url for your facebook page - in other words I could claim

facebook.com/jon.steadman

but of course there can be only one! so will you be rushing to get in?

Personally, I can't see the advantage of being listed in either Facebook or Myspace...I'm on both and haven't made a dollar's profit from either...What's the point?...insanity...Ben

No, I won't be losing sleep to do that.

If my friends are that desperate to find me on facebook, they will.  And if they can't find me, they can phone me - they'll have my number. aww

The point is - if someone wants to find you, they dont have to 'search' but they could make the assumption facebook.com/darren.morrissey

In the same way as coke went for coke.com as against a random set of letters and numbers behind the URL

Okay. They could make that assumption and they would get one of the 10 or so Darren Morrisseys on Facebook. If it's the wrong one (and there's a nine in ten chance) then a 'search' is needed anyway. Likewise, 18 people pop up on a 'search' for your name, 71 for Aodan (276 if I use a variation on her name) and 148 for Susan. The odds get longer.

Anecdotally, people seem to prefer to use search engines to find stuff on the net rather then urls. I have watched you use Google to get to Amazon, Youtube and Ebay in the recent past.

Your point about Coke is a good one, however it doesn't always work if someone got there first. B&Q had to settle for DIY.com a few years back and Gmail famously missed out on gmail.co.uk. And of course for many Uk companies, you have to remember to put the right suffix on the end - Argos and Comet are examples. It's counter intuitive to use a US based url for a UK based website or person.

Oh yeah... and f**ck you Windows for making me type this twice. It was way better the first time!

If that's the case, isn't it a bit like posting 'FIRST' on the comments section of a news article?

There maybe 18 Jon Steadman's on facebook but there can be only 1 with the URL and that... well that would be me :)

Personally, I consider Shaz to be much more of a man then you, without even needing a facebook url to prove it to anyone!

Also, she's not very manly, which leads me to suspect that you...

Ahem...

Probably best not call out the kettle when your pot is way blacker, dude! I can out-pedant you with my eyes shut and my hands tied behind yo momma's back!

It's your choice - you can either backpedal, get all defensive, change the subject or give in gracefully.

I'm not even sure if I'm still in this fight, but if so may I request that we make a change from the usual handbags & go with stilettos? I don't want Stead trying to cheat by using a man bag.

Or maybe you changed the point when it didn't work out so well for you. It's not like you haven't done that once already in this thread.

I was merely pointing out your mistype. Nothing complicated. :)

Come on now, lets wind this up before the ladies get upset. And, no lady jokes JDK - that would be too obvious.

But given who it is getting upset, it must be a hard thing for the JDK to resist, no?
