How do we measure up?

That's the tag line on the Union poster that's on all the pinboards in my building. Underneath the tag line, it lists a bunch of criteria and then compares them against a competing union.

Most important though is the rather clever picture that they've knocked up. It's of a tape measure and some apples. I'm not sure what the relevance of the apples is.

Anyway... how do they measure up? Take a close look at the photo below and tell me what's wrong with it...

There should be a comma after "so"

and the apple apears to be 36 centimetres round - which cant be right?

There should be a comma, but given that it's a poster, I'm prepared to give them a free pass on that. It's something more fundamental than that.

I got it...  there seems to be only 2 cms for every inch on the tape measure... that is just so bad for a poster about measuring up!

FAIL!

Perhaps, deep down they know that they don't measure up?

Okay. I've been investigating this further.
The original photograph was taken by a Croatian chap by the name of Sanja Gjenero. It seems that in Croatia and a few other countries in the region, they have a historical unit of measurement called the Hvat which very roughly equals 2 metres and would go some way to explaining the odd measurements.

Either way, it strikes me as pretty poor attention to detail considering their strap line. It's this sort of carelessness the leads to... well this sort of carelessness.

I propose writing an email to the boss of the Union in question to see what he says. I would hope that he will do the same simple research that I did and supply and appropriate response... but somehow I doubt it...

"used the more conventional metric system" - exsqueeze me?

Just because the bloody frenchies and their silly euro friends can't get their head around inches doesnt mean we're unconventional. Give me pounds over kilo's any day - we invented Maths, measurement, weight and the very ground we walk on* - so we'll have it our way!

*most of that is bollocks to be fair...
