Full-Cream Milk Is Off The Menu

I just went to the shop to buy some milk.  I wanted the Full Cream stuff.  Sometimes referred to as 'Whole' milk.

Couldn't find any.

I have come home with a bottle of Pastrurised Standardised Homogenised Milk on the basis that the lid is blue.

Can someone tell me what I have, please?

You should have taken the red lid.

I dunno. The milk over here usually says what it is :) But usually Red is whole milk, and different variations of blue are 2%-skim milk

Ooooo.  Careful Aodan.  I think the system here is, in fact, very different.  Firstly, noone informs us what the exact fat content is (that would be far too helpful, and dare I say it, a bit American).  Red top is usually skimmed milk.  Blue top is full fat, and green is semi-skimmed.  What BigMan appears to have purchased is Homogenised milk - might taste a bit UHT...

That's good to know - should I ever be over there again and need to buy milk I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Maybe we're too stupid over here and everything needs to be labled? LOL If I was forced to choose by colour, I'd be looking all over for some sort of colour chart.

As for the homogenized.. every type of milk in my fridge (we've got whole milk to lactose free skim milk in there) save the fat free half and half, and the heavy cream says that it is Homogenized. I guess I just assumed all milk was.

Embarrassingly I wasn't really sure what "homogenized" meant - so I looked it up and found this little tid bit http://home.nycap.rr.com/useless/milk/

Hmmm.

I have a feeling most milk here might be too...although (interestingly) I don't think this was the case when I learned about it at school.  That implies there has been a milk processing shift in the last 10 yrs.

Interesting.

Not had full fat milk since I left home. I take it that one no longer has to shake it to mix the cream then?

I've never had to shake the milk.

Although I do shake the cream, which is strange - I don't know why I do it, but I always do.

At my local Market

Red = Whole aka Vitamin D
Dark Blue = 2% Fat
Light Blue = 1% Fat
Green = 1/2% Fat (yes there is such a thing)
Pink = Fat Free aka Skim

My wife was brought up on 1/2% and when I bought skim she complained she could taste the difference. I mean give me a break!

So when you go up to the counter and say "I'd like to buy this day please" do they look at you all strange?

My 6'3'' German housemate drinks gallons of full fat milk a day.  There is a lesson in that somewhere...

Inseam.  Once again our colonial cousins create a new word where it ain't needed.

Six foot exactly, here.  With a 32" inside leg measurement.

Gah.

I was gonna subject you to a long and entertaining diatribe about terribly important issues with many witty and insightful points.  But 'Gah' took less time to say.
