1940 Air Terminal Museum...

I didn't even know this place existed until this week...The 1940 Air Terminal Museum is the original control tower and passenger terminal building at Hobby Airport in Houston...It was in operation from 1940 to 1955 when the present terminal was built...

I went there on a field trip with a photography club I belong to and by luck a guy rode with me who worked there as a ramp agent in the early fifties so I got a lot of insight to the place that nobody else did...They are doing a total restoration of it from donations by various enthusiasts and some of the airlines...

Here is a link to some pictures I took there...As luck would have it, the Houston Wings & Wheels club met there today also and I got the chance to take pictures of a lot of classics...If I had thought of it, I would have cleaned up my truck for its aerial view...This place goes on the Truckman Highly Recommended List...sprint.gif...Ben

Being the nosey sod that I am, I clicked on the Ben's Galleries link and saw your collection of photos from Ike. Blimey! I dont know if you posted those at the time, but I also dont remember you telling us it got that bad mate!

The hanger looked cool though.

I think that terminal is one of the coolest looking buildings ever. They really knew how to build 'em in the 40's, eh? If I'm ever in Houston, I'll make a point of visiting it!

Nice pics, Ben - thanks for sharing - Your fish-eye lens is most excellent!

On the subject of historical architecture, I was recently browsing this page on Wiki which contains some nice examples of buildings over the years - Bristol was bombed to buggery in WW2, so there isn't as much of it as we'd like, but there are some pretty cool buildings.

My favourite picture on the page though, is this one (too w i d e to show in the thread.

There are many other most excellent buildings in Bristol that don't feature on the page:

This is an oooold pub - I went there for drinks after work on Tuesday!

And this claims to be the oldest pub in Bristol... but I've never been there.

And one of my favourite things ever - the Clifton Suspension Bridge - the first of it's kind, built by Brunel.

I did not take any of these pictures! I have photographed most of them, but all my pictures are stuck on the hard drive of my broken desktop pc which I really really need to get round to fixing!

Sorry for hijacking - you can have your thread back now!

That panorama shot is really cool, Darren...I've got to try that now that I bought Photoshop...The terminal building is in the art deco style which was popular in the thirties and forties...I'm looking forward to going back as they restore more of it...Ben

It was actually pretty mild damage in my neighborhood, Jon...Mostly just wind damage...A tree fell on my Mom's house and the repair industry has been so busy ever since, she's just now getting it fixed...She got her new roof and the sheetrock work inside is happening now...

I would like to have gotten some photos outside at the height of the storm but I didn't want to risk having several thousand dollars worth of equipment blown into the next county...I was without electricity for a week but at least I had running water...Ben
