The following Dodgers have been smited by the JDK for their crimes against Jam:
All the girls! for picking on the JDK and damaging his already delicate self esteem!
The Basserd Who Nicked Copper's Stuff For the offense of nicking Copper's stuff. You are a tw*t, whoever you are and we all hope you get run over by a tram in Nottingham. Or Liverpool. Or whereever else they have trams!
Copper For the crime of playing with her Wii instead of her Jammie pals!
I watched Vanilla Sky today, a 2000 romantic thriller with Tom Cruise and others.
This is one of my favourite films - mainly because of Penelope Cruz rather than Tom Cruise I think. It was the first DVD I ever bought and I've probably watched it more than 10 times.
Great movie! Quite a few shocks and nothing's what you are expecting at all... unless you've seen it as many times as I have of course!
I watched Vanilla Sky today, a 2000 romantic thriller with Tom Cruise and others. ... It's worth a watch!
I think I remember this one - one to watch to the very end if I'm thinking of the right one. I remember liking it a lot and vowing to watch it again, but I never have.
I'd forgotten it. It's now back on my list. Thanks Jon.
For the first time in at least a couple of years, I sat down last night in a movie theater and watched "Gran Torino" (blind date)...I can highly recommend the movie as one of Eastwood's finest yet......(The date will not be a repeat)...
Today I've watched five classic movies from W.C. Fields, "The Bank Dick", "My Little Chickadee", "You Can't Cheat An Honest Man", It's A Gift" and "International House"...There's no such thing as a bad movie from Uncle Bill...Ben

I watched 'In The Line Of Fire' the other day. There seems to be a bit of a Clint Eastwood season on the telly. Clint was great. John Malkovich was great (as always). Frasier's Dad was great, too!
I just bought the DVD of "No Country For Old Men" today at Sam's...Should be a good'un......Ben
Edit: Boy was I wrong...A complete waste of $18.88 and however much of my life that I wasted and can't get back...The most unsatisfying ending of any movie I have ever seen...It's as if the point was to create some very interesting characters and weave them into an intriguing story then break for lunch and don't bother coming back to finish the film...Don't bother...Three thumbs down...
Truckman wrote: ...The ending [to Badman] was obviously written by the same scriptwriter that wrote "No Country For Old Men"...It was as if the final reel was missing...
So Ben didn't like No Country For Old Men, by the Coen Brothers.
I thought it was okay and all the plotlines that were started finished off:
Guy that stole a bunch of cash at the start gets his just desserts at the end... Check. Sheriff (played by the very, very cool Tommy Lee Jones) who was due to retire soon gets to retire at the end... Check. Anti-Hero hitman hired to kill thief gets many cool scenes and suffers all kinds of horrible injuries in the climax of the film (in true Die-Hard style) yet finishes the job and survives to fight another day... Check!
All present and correct.
Coen Brothers movies often quietly ignore convention and in this case the narrative of the movie wasn't actually about the trailer park scumbag who nicked the drug dealer's money and put his family in harms way or even the vaguely inept ageing sherrif (and his deputy who was a Terminator in another life) who keeps turning up just after a bunch of people get killed. It's actually the hitman, and if you watch the movie with that in mind, it has a clear start, middle and end.
The pacing of this was pretty slow - I don't think it would appeal to Stead, but the performances are excellent and Tommy Lee Jones' face is even craggier in High Definition. Oh my! :thumbusp:
Also... it won four oscars! Not for Tommy Lee Jones' face, but for Best Achievement in Directing, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published (it was based on a book) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (ironically for the hitman who wasn't in a supporting role...).
Appreciation of art is very subjective - what is satisfying to one person may simple just 'not work' for someone else. Its why so many bands / artists part company over artistic differences - there is often no tangilble argument to be had
As for winning Oscars - well, thats decided in advance by the industry and what they want to promote in any given year. This year for example, with the onset of the recession, they wanted to crack open emerging markets so they manufactured the success of Slumdog Millionnaire - a load of old tripe by anyone's standard but generated a load of interest in Bollywood (cheap films that make big profit) and generated Asian interest in hollywood - a win win!

NCFOM probably seemed as if the final reel was missing because it was so dull I fell asleep in the middle...The TV commercial for it had all the action scenes in it...So there back to you...
I'm glad this burning issue finally got settled in my favor...
I spent the last week or two watching seasons one through six of "The Shield", my favorite cop drama since "Highway Patrol" went off the air...The storyline keeps me coming back for more...I've got season seven (the final) pre-ordered from Amazon...It's on the Truckman Highly Recommended List...Don't miss it......Ben

Charlie Wilsons War - this was written by Aaron Sorkin (ala West Wing) and deals with the politics behind the arming of the freedom fighters in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation. Very well written and some stunning performances from the cast - particularly Phillip Seymour Hoffman who as usual was outstanding. Julia Roberts was 'OK' but I sense that she is still cast in films because she's priddy rather than because of any talent. A good watch though - but you have to watch it, the talent is in the script and the performances - not an action film. Ned Beatty was cool too :)
Redacted - This was trying to be a first person point of view war documentary / drama intercut with some cinematic moments. It was badly written and compounded by some pretty awful performances. I turned it off 55 minutes through the 1 1/2 hrs - not worth bothering with -

I think you were conned by the telly. It certainly wasn't an action film! There were maybe three scenes with action in them, but they weren't the focus of the movie. Blame your TV for fibbing to you!

I've seen the first three seasons of this and have 4 on DVD watch (I've kinda had it for about 2 years...) I really enjoyed it. Especially because one of the characters is called Ass Invader! Favourite character is good old Shane.

OK so this weekend I saw two movies.
Charlie Wilsons War
I saw this a while back on the telly. As you say, pretty good stuff. I don't entirely agree with you on Julia Roberts, though - although this wasn't one of her strongest performances, she is capable of some pretty good acting. I think she just gets a lot of 'pretty girl' roles because of her looks!

That's a shame. I heard that it really kicks in at 56 minutes and ends up being the best film ever comitted to film ever.
I went into this expecting it to be a pretty average actioner with some kids pretending to be Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Turned out it was pretty damn good!
Some very nice performances, particularly form the underused Karl Urban's 'Bones' and Simon Pegg's 'Scotty'. The cast seemed to gel together well and the banter - particularly in the first half between Kirk and McCoy was superb.
It also had some very nice action sequences and some verry pretty visuals. All in all, it probably won't go down as a Trek classic, but is better than many of the movie outings (Star Trek 5 and most of the Next Generation ones in particular) sets the franchise up nicely for some more of the good stuff!
I also saw Wolverine a couple of weeks ago. Nice action and a few good one liners. That's about all.
I saw Star Trek last night myself. I wasn't expecting to love it... I wasn't even going to see it, but had a free evening to myself and figured I'd go. The only reason I was going to see it at ALL was because Pegg was in it (and I have googly eyes for him).
I surprised myself by really, really enjoying it. I was even kind of sad when it ended.
Next, I really want to see Wolverine but I've been hearing very mixed things about it.
I don't know what kind of previews you had before Star Trek, but they showed one for the new Terminator movie, the new GI Joe movie (that I never would have guessed was GI Joe until they said that's what it was) and I must go see those two as well (My other googly eye targets Christian Bale and Christopher Eccleston are in those two lol gah I'm such a girl sometimes).
Of the non-theater movies I've seen and loved recently, I caught Eagle vs Shark on netflix the other day and it was instant nerd love

Nah. You didn't see the bit where the giant robots fought each other or the bit where giant robots blew stuff up or the bit where giant robots caused property damage.
No, wait... yes you did...
But the first one was fun, so I anticipate that this one will be as well!
Terminator: Salvation... good film. Not quite as good as I had anticipated, but I enjoyed it all the same. Had enough action and growling uber-man types to satisfy that itch.. but it fell a little flat on the "do I really care about these people?" The answer to that was, " no.. not really..blow something else up".
Looking forward to that one. I'm not sure when it's out over here.
I have a bit of a backlog of movies at the moment.
Love film sent me Pineapple Express, which is supposed to be quite funny, and on my sky box I have Wanted (probably nothing like the AWESOME source material), Night at the Museum (I loathe Ben Stiller, but people keep telling me it's a good movie) and a couple of others that elude me at the moment.

I may watch it tonight in front of my lovely roast dinner. BEEFS!
Ahem.
Also, I saw Son of Rambow t'other night. I think Stead already covered it earlier in the thread, but I can only agree with his assessment. Very good. Very funny.
