C&P

Credit card fraud hits new high despite chip and PIN

Credit and debit card fraud has soared to a record £500 million despite the introduction of new chip-and-PIN technology, it emerged today.
Banks, credit card companies and shop owners hoped that the new technology would reduce fraud because a four-digit personal identification number is harder to reproduce than a signature.

But far from deterring fraudsters, the new measures have encouraged criminals to steal more cards.

The full article can be read on the Times Online website.

Now, all I can say is "I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

Not you , obviously...

But I've been saying for the last 2 years that Chip & Pin ain't gonna make a blind bit of difference to card fraud. it's old, old technology. It's been around on the continent for about a decade. France introduced it about 6 years ago and noticed a slight 6 month dip in frad levels before they returned to normal.

Lets face it - if you went into you local petrol station and were presented with a chip and pin reader, how do you tell if it's genuine? Hmm? Hmm? No two places seem to have the same type of reader. So you're being asked to stick your card into a strange and unverifiable machine and then type in your PIN. I'll let you do the maths.

Add that to the number of people that I regularly observe entering their PIN number with no regard as to who might be watching.

Ho hum. Chip and Pin is one of my pet rants. I have nothing against it, but its no more or less secure than signatures. Just a little bit more convenient as far as the faffing and the signing and the bits of paper are concerned. I think it's a common misconsception that this benefits the customers in any way - it's more of a token gesture by the industry and the government to show that they really are concerned about fraud. And kissing babies.

Rant over. I shall return to my slumber.

I have now received this rant in audio and visual.  I'm a lucky, lucky girl, me.

Never mind D.  You just go back to sleep now.  "Hush little baby don't say a word..."

Not sure we use this here. My signature is almost impossible to reproduce, you'd practically have to unlearn how to write.

From a fraud prevention standpoint?

RE: C&P

What did I say all those months ago, hmm?  What did I say?

Well... Ross agrees with me anyway.  Hah!

'Chip and pin' security warning

A leading security expert has warned that new chip and pin credit and debit cards could be open to fraud.

Professor Ross Anderson, from Cambridge University, says villains will be able to capture card and pin data to "make up" forged cards.

Mr Anderson, an expert in security engineering, predicts problems.

"The sort of thing that I expect to go wrong is that villains will set up in business with equipment that will capture customer pins," he said.

"Now we're all being trained to use our pins at the point of sale it's a simple matter to set up a market stall and capture card and pin data.

"They can make up forged cards and use them, for example, at cash machines."

I'll shut up now.

No argument from me on that score.  It's the crowing by the banks and government about safety and fraud prevention that I like to bitch and moan about!

Mine too!  It really annoys me, when I'm have a crap day, sign for something & the cashier takes one look & bursts into gales of laughter, I'm always tempted to point at their haircut & start laughing myself.

i went into CVS (a hateful american pharmacy/drug store/cheap tacky stuff type place) the other day and i was purchasing about $30 worth of stuff with my home credit card - despite the whole signature is your id thing, quite often here you get asked for your license as additional proof of id - this case was no different and when i produced my driver's license - the young 12 year old keenan (from 'keenan and kel') look-a-like burst into a fit of laughter shouting some kind of 'areeee you seriiiious.. you want me to believe this is youuuu' kind of a rant - he then went to get the manager - actually, he might have been kel - and he did a similar thing, holding it up to my face, turning it over three or four times, repeating the question multiple ways to see if i would be like 'oh, oh you're right, it's not me'

- i told them if they wanted me to take my $30 of business else where i'd be happy to etc etc - funny enough, they ran my card

also, i would like to note, IF (and of course i never would ) i was going to be stealing something off someone's card i surely wouldnt just buy $30 worth of stupid stuff

Sometimes I find it hard to understand why it's wrong to hit these people.

It may be wrong to hit 'em, but I've just found a little 16th century by-law that say's you're allowed to murder them in cold blood with a cucumber or piece of battered cod.  But only if it's a tuesday and it's raining.

RE: C&P

Took me a while to find, but here are the relevant bits:

The Numpty Reform Act 1597 (Amended in 1976)

Subsection 3 Paragraph 1 (a-c)

A numpty is defined as any person who:

a) demontrates an IQ lower than that of a chair;
b) unsuccessfully attempts to ridicule their betters; and
c) can be reasonably described as a character from a stupid TV show (usually a sitcom or children's television programme).

Subsection 3 Paragraph 8b

Furthermore it is declared that any person behaving in the manner described in subsection 3 Paragraph 1 (a-c) may, at the discretion of their betters, be subject to one or more of the following punishments:

i) beaten about the head with an item of battered seafood;
ii) beaten about the head with an appropriate salad item;
iii) drowned in a pot of muller lite yogurt; or
iv) frowned at disapprovingly.

If the level of numptiness displayed iS severe enough, this punishment should be carried out until such time as the offender is dead to prevent any (further) offspring who may carry hereditary numptiness to the next generation.

Darren, you've been duped!  There were no Muller lite yoghurts in 1976!

By 1990, we had successfully launched the virtually fat free Müllerlight and the dairy rice snack Müllerice.

Propoganda.  All of it.  I'll not brook it.  Or have any truck with it.

Frankly I'm surprised that a man of your obvious intelligence would fall for such a obvious deception by the Numpty population.
