10 Items or Less

Does anyone here have a problem with the concept of a '10 Items Or Less' checkout in a supermarket? And how exactly does renaming it 'Up to 10 items' make it easier to understand?

Surely the people who use these checkouts incorrectly have either miscounted or are wilfully ignoring the policy. And how do 'The Plain English Campaign' expect to be taken seriously when they back this sort of nonsense. I'm almost inclined to think that Tesco are taking the p1ss.

I don't really care. I just thought it was amusing that someone in Tesco Head Office thought it was an issue worth getting excited about! Then I think about some of the pointless things my employers have spent time and money on and realised it's not all that bad!

But they're actually right! It doesn't make it any easier to understand, it merely makes it correct.
I do think they should create a policy where you're charged for all the items you take to the 10 items or less queue, but can only take home the 1st 10 put through the till, with the remainder being donated to charity. That'd teach people to count!

Personally I think a 'basket only' till is the way to go. I have pretty strong arms, I can get A LOT in a basket! :)

Personally I hate the '10 items or less queue'. For some reason it's always contains the complete morons who can't wait for just a few minutes to get served. If they have to wait any longer than about 2 minutes they slam their basket down, huff and puff and storm out. I saw somebody do this once just because some elderly lady had decided to take ages fishing around in her purse to get her money out (and no it wasn't me before the JDK comments), they even pushed past her on their way out and just left the basket on the floor in the middle of the aisle.

I've always used the 'pick the longest queue and join that' theory (longest in length rather than people as that is often the 10 item or less queue so out of bounds). Not sure where I got this theory from, but it does seem to work somehow, you'd be surprised. Usually some of the people in front of you in the 'long' queue leave because they see an opening somewhere else in a shorter queue, or they are a moron and just dump and leave, the till person starts to work a bit quicker as they see the growing queue, the people in the queue load their stuff a bit quicker for the same reason, you sort of resign yourself to probably waiting a bit longer, chill out and amuse yourself by watching the morons... and by the time you know it you're paying, and it didn't really take as much time as you initially thought it would... well it works for me!!  And when I shop with the JDK he's always there to entertain my with his antics whilst we queue anyway...biggrin
