Finally, some sense!

Hoo bloody ray.

Call to tackle UK business waste
The government needs to step up efforts to reduce waste from business, according to a parliamentary committee.

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee recommends using variable VAT rates to cut unsustainable consumption of raw materials.

Its report says pressure has so far concentrated on householders, who account for only 9% of the UK's waste.

Environment minister Joan Ruddock said the government does have measures that are inducing businesses to cut waste.

Obviously it will be completely ignored, and the world will continue to rely on Catfish recycling her baked bean tins to save it!

I'd have told them that for the price of a pint! & yes, too sensible to be acted upon.

Recycling at home is like praying...

Actually, I think you'll find it's a lot more effort.

We have to recycle in my town. They dig through our bins and give us tickets (costly ones too) if we don't.

Fines for bad recycling. That's just nuts. How strict are they?

Serious enough that they apparently have people whose whole job is digging through resident's trash looking for non-recyclers. I was not so careful with it and they sent an itemized list of everything I should have recycled. It came with a warning that next time would be a $50 fine, followed by $100 and up to $250 for each additional "offense".

My husband's grandmother has 8 different bins for all of the different things she has to recycle and she STILL gets ticketed all the time. She's in a different county though.. ours isn't nearly as strict. We can throw it all into one bin, she has to separate everything.

But if they have people paid to root through every bin anyway, wouldn't it make more sense for them to sort it?

The town uses the recycling program as a revue generator. Less the actual recycling, and more the fines they levy on people for not doing it. If they didn't have to pay the garbage pickers, they'd save a whole lot of money.
