Sick Days

So, a member of my team has just had 3 days off 'sick' because she had two teeth removed and her mouth hurt. Now that's fine and I wouldn't normally have a problem with it, but the reason she had 2 teeth removed was not because there was something wrong with them but to allow space for a brace to straighten her teeth. And it's not even like her teeth were terrible to start with.

So what I'm really asking is - do you think it's acceptable to take sick days to recover from planned unneccessary cosmetic surgery or should it be taken as holiday? If I decided to have botox in wherever it is one gets botoxed (lips? eyebrows?) would it be okay for me to claim that as sick leave?

As a slight digression, what is it with Americans and the desire to have perfectly straight, blindingly white teeth? Is that an unjustified stereotype or are they just nuts? Do they all want perfect teeth or just the tossers?

I'll stop now...

I had this very issue once with a member of my then team - actually - it was referred to me because the team manager, who worked for me, couldnt hack it so as next one up the chain - I was lumbered with it.

She said she wanted 2 weeks sick leave for a 'health issue'. As she knew she wanted the time off I assumed it was planned and asked for details. Eventually she admitted she was having her boobs done. I asked her why she thought she should take this as sickness rather than holiday - she said "Its OK I'll get a sick note from my GP".

She seemed quite upset when I told her she'd have to take it as holiday, else I would record it as unapproved absence....

People eh?

I'm not a fan of the perfectly straight hollywood mouth. I like teeth with character. I actually prefer them a bit crooked.

As for your team member... was it purely cosmetic, or did she have painful teeth crowding, or was the crowding causing other problems? My brother has a bit of a crowding problem.. his wisdom teeth came in but his mouth wasn't actually big enough to hold them without painfully pushing his other teeth out of the way. It has caused him quite a bit of dental grief.

Generally speaking though... if you want lipo or a boob job or whatever..don't use sick days.

Cool. Lots of simultaneous postage!

The tooth job is purely cosmetic. She just wants to 'improve her smile'.

Then no sick days for her.

Although it could be argued (not by me, however) that vanity is a sickness...
