Why Boxing Day is called Boxing Day

In England a long time ago…

Servants were required to work on Christmas. They were responsible for making the holiday run smoothly for wealthy landowners. They were allowed to take leave on December 26th and visit their families. The employers gave each servant a box containing gifts and bonuses. In addition, around the 800s' churches opened their alms boxes (boxes where people place monetary donations) and distributed the contents to poor.


I'm taking leave on 26th too, but I get to visit the Mother-in-law from Hell.

This whole definition of boxing day thing... are you sure? I seem to remember some reference to actual Boxing somewhere....


Probably wrong or maybe I dreamt it...

Picture a car, laden with Christmas presents, children being strapped into the back, ready to leave...


Mother in law from hell:  "So how far away do these friends you're visiting live?"
Me:  "Only a couple of miles.  In Corfe Mullen."
Mother in law from hell:  "And what time are you due there?"
Me:  "We said between 10 and 10.30."
Mother in law from hell: "So you don't HAVE to leave just yet do you?"
Me: "Carol, it's already 10.15.  We want to get going"
Mother in law from hell: "You can stay a bit longer.  I'm family, they're only friends."
