How Does it Feel to Die

I've just read a very macabre article in New Scientist regarding the different ways to die, and what they probably feel like. The article covered the different modes of death as I've listed in the poll above. So which would it be if given the choice?

Since the poll doesn't seem to appear for me, I'll just mention that earthly death is not the end of life, but the beginning of everlasting life or eternal damnation...I realize that my beliefs may not be shared by all but I think we can all agree that the cessation of mortal existence is a step into the unknown and we must each prepare in our own way...Ben

I thought it was a mortal sin to... er... prepare your own way!

I've always had a particular aversion to drowning and burning...Bleeding and falling to death leave too much time for contemplation of death (i.e. horror)...Four of the choices would indicate a government sponsored execution which is unacceptable because my memory would be diminished in the eyes of the few that may think highly of me...Explosive decompression is acceptable as it is quick, but unless my plans are changed for me once again, I'll look forward to a heart attack...Ben

I choose none of the above and instead plump for pegging it quietly in my sleep. That's the way for me!

As for the whole afterlife thing - well each to their own, but I'm pretty sure that as I wasnt aware of anything for the billions and billions of years that went by prior to my birth, I cant imagine there will be much awareness of the years after my death - so my view is "enjoy it while its there"!

Ho hum... I suppose the poll has kinda died a death !

The thing is that most people would choose going quietly in their sleep if they could. However, the article was about how it might feel to die, and so I suppose going quietly in your sleep doesn't feel of much and so wasn't included!  However, if you want it quick and painless... decapitation is the one for you ! weirdface.gif

Is it quick and painless though - have we ever worked it out?

Well, the New Scientist article presented all the evidence and this was what the experts came up with. They don't even think that leathal injection is painless or quick for everybody as the initial sedative they give can sometimes not work. Decapitation is definitely the quickest way to stop oxygen to the brain... you can't stop it any quicker than this by any other method... as long as it's a full quick clean cut and doesn't take 3 attempts and finishing the job off with a knife like for Mary Queen of Scots!  Or like the poor Countess of Salisbury for whom it took 11 axe blows as she kept trying to get away! bleh

Anyone seen the movie Severance? Pretty standard slasher movie. There's a scene early on in which a character insists that the head stays alive for several seconds after it's severed, thus enabling the severee to see his own decapitated body before dying. No-one believes him (presumably because it's not true).

Needless to say, that character dies 'ironically' by decapitation a few scenes later. His head rolls across the floor to a spot where it's facing his body. In the few seconds it take him to die, he spots his body and smiles knowingly to himself before karking it!

It wasn't a very good film, really.

What about an explosive belt wrapped around the head? that's gotta be quicker?

How about superheating - being instantaneously incinerated? That probably doesn't hurt much.
