Movies Wot I Saw

So me 'n Catfish and Stead went to see Spiderman 3 on Friday. What a disappointment. After setting the bar so high on the previous two movies, you'd think that having the same team on board for the third installment would have ensured a similarly fantastic movie. Not the case apparently. Instead we were treated to a rubbish plot, one or two admittedly spectacular fight scenes, too many bad guys and way to much whining from Mary Jane Watson about how Peter Parker doesn't understand her and how do you think that makes her feeeeeel? And an unnatural preoccupation with wanting to talk about their relationship. It was quite watchable, but should have been 50 times better! blankstare.gif

On the other hand, I saw Children of Men last night - a British movie which was about Clive Owen running around in flip-flops trying to save a pregnant foreign girl from some very bad people. This presented a very scary vision of the future in which everybody (except the pregnant foreign girl) is infertile and the British goverment has decided to deport all of the foriegners (including the pregnant foreign girl). Except that by 'deport' they seem to mean 'chuck 'em in a nasty commune in Bexhill'. Lots of exciting drama and one really amazing set piece near the end that's a fantastic technical acheivement as well as being very very cool. thumbsup.gifbiggrin.gif

So... British Movies 1 biggrin.gif - Hollywood 0 cry.gif

Yep - disappointing S3 was - two things about it that I really didnt like -

One (as usual) it was incredibly hard to follow what was going on on screen - the way they have chosen to direct the 'swinging' action has always been problematic but it was especially bad - and some of the CGI was ropey. Most importantly for me though was that there were too many bad guys! I really felt like they were trying to tie up loose ends at the end of a series - I wouldnt expect to see S4 anytime soon!

I've heard great things about children of men - was it on DVD like?

I watched "Downfall" about the last days of Hitler in the bunker (a german film with subtitles) a couple of weeks back and that was very good too! jdkthumb 25x45

Did you find the conversations with unfocussed people as annoying as I did? There were at least 3 occasions in Spidey 3 where there would be two people in shot having a conversation - one in focus, the other not. And the focus didn't change as each person spoke - they just sayed as a fuzzy pinkish blob in the background- even when they were talking loads...

Children of Men was on DVD, but sadly one I had to return today. It may find it's way into my collection soon enough though. wink.gif

I didnt really notice the focus issue - but I dont have your directors eye as it were - it probably occured around the time MJ was banging on about 'feelings' so I was looking around for a razorblade...

I agree with everything you have said about Spiderman III. Including that weird focusing thing. They did it a few times, but most notably the scene where Aunt May and Peter are talking...she's in the background, completely fuzzed out the whole time. Then they focus in on her, but not during any particular poignant moment. She'd already put the ring down on the TV...weird.

Children of Men I REALLY want to see.. but I've gotta get through all of these other DVD's I've got here.

Once you've seen it, CoM will go down in your memory as 'That Movie With Clive Owen In Flip-Flops'. Although at one point, he loses one of them, so for a bit it's 'That Movie With Clive Owen In A Flip-Flop'.

It also sports one of the slowest car chases I've ever seen! Weeeeeeeeeee!

Well now because of that statement, anything I MAY have taken from that movie will be overshadowed by "Clive Owen in Flip-Flops".

The one thing I disliked the most about Spidey 3 was that when Aunt May poured the tea it was just water... that really irritated me. They could afford all those expensive CGI effects, but somebody forgot to buy the teabags... sheesh disbelief.gif

I thought CoM was a great film and not an easily forgotton one. It was a grim view of the future, but quite plausible, which made it hard hitting and thought provoking. I was very surprised to find out that it was based on a story by
P. D. James when the credits rolled...  I thought she mainly writes very complicated murder mystery type stuff, of which I've read a couple and they are hard going !

So just by chance Children of Men was on pay-per-view. So I ordered it today while I try to fight off this really high nasty fever I've got today.

Excellent film. Although I was on the look out for Flip-Flops... I almost cheered when I saw them :lol

Actually, it's not all that unrealistic. You've drunk tea at my mother's house. Yuk. bleh.gif

It was SO silly wasnt it - why wouldnt they get something like that right! so annoying. Also I didnt like seeing YET AGAIN the mask being cut up so you could see his face. I bet whats his face insisted on more 'face time' on screen in his contract or summit

Aye. It's kinda like Batman whipping his mask off every 3 seconds, or Superman popping his specs on for the big fight at the end!

And it bugged me that at the end of the movie Spidey went to see MJ at the bottom of the tower and the mast was intact!!!! its bad enough that they clearly have one all over body suit for normal shots and a separate body and mask suit for those scenes where he takes the mask off - but WHY did the mask heal itself? madness I tells ya...

You get the feeling we felt let down? Apparently the last Pirates film is arse too... ho hum...

Haven't seen any reviews of Pirates yet. It can't be as disapointing as Spidey, though.

Maybe I'll go see that one by myself since Kevin went and saw 28 Weeks Later without me...

I saw 28 Weeks Later the other week, toio. Not with Kevin, though. I enjoyed it - it was fun. The helicopter scene was cool! It was nice that it didn't follow Hollywood horror movie conventions!

Maybe the discontentment extends as far as the kid too? I could provide the excuse to dump the lot of them and come to England for a whole new exciting life - I dont mind being the bad guy!

And discuss...
