A Dorset woman, gravely injured in a road accident caused by her brother's negligent driving, today won £230,000 agreed damages in London's High Court.
Karen Hanmer, 38, sustained fractures to the left thigh, elbow and jaw, together with head wounds which left her with double vision. Her husband, Barry, and her son, Anthony, were also injured.
The accident occurred in Creekmoor, Dorset, on 13 June 1998 when the car in which they were travelling drifted into the path of oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision at high-speed. At the wheel was Mrs Hanmer's brother, David Willis, who received a ‘very serious head injury’ in the collision, the family's counsel, Harry Trusted, told the court.
Mr Hanmer, 46, suffered a spinal injury and received £35,000 compensation in an earlier settlement.
Mr Trusted told Mr Justice Bell today that a settlement had also now been reached in Mrs Hanmer's case whereby she will receive £230,000 for her injuries, plus her legal costs.
Mrs Hanmer sued her brother - Mr Willis, of Canford Heath, Poole - whose motor insurers admitted ‘primary negligence’, although his sister was not wearing a seat belt.
After today's settlement was announced Mr Justice Bell wished Mrs Hanmer well for the future, adding: ‘I see she has made some recovery, I hope that continues’.
Or the things families do FOR each other - one hell of a co-incidence being crashed into by a family member and they both end up suing each others insurance............. something stinks or am I just a cynic?
