Guzzle that Gas!

So there was this item on the BBC news this morning about a convoluted plan to raise cash... er... discourage the use of high-polluting vehicle by charging gas guzzlers more for parking permits in Richmond.  This means that the owners of 4 wheel drive vehicles and those giant people carriers or even just older less efficient cars will have to pay more to park outside their own houses.

Is it just me or is this just dumb?  And overly complicated?  Rather than hitting people with a stealth tax like this, why not simply raise the tax on petrol?  That way people who use more petrol (and therefore produce more harmful emissions), pay more and people who use less petrol (and therefore produce less harmful emissions) pay less and it's all a bit fairer.

Have we covered this before?  Probably.  Just ignore me...

Speaking of harmful emissions...  how about a fart tax.  Or a BO tax.  I had to sit on the bus with a farty smelly bloke today.  And Stead had to sit on the train next to a guy who smelled of wee.  Maybe we should just crossbow them, though...

The road tax system whether it be tolls, tax discs or locally imposed congestion charging is a nonsense in the UK.

JDK you are spot on - simply raise the tax on petrol and be done with the other stuff that way the heavy user will pay the heavy levy. There is a problem though - with the locally imposed taxes you can generate more income because those who use their cars infrequently pay the same road tax and those who have to drive into the centre of London (and lets face it  - no one does that out of choice!) get clobbered too so its just a money making scam.
