Highway Robbery Still Exists

I just popped over to my local taxi firm to enquire how much a 20 mile journey from Wells to Bristol would be.

Somewhere in the 60 quid range was the reply. Does anyone else find that a little excessive?

Yes.

Catch the bus.

Or drive.

Difficult past midnight when there are no buses and the person in question doesn't drive

I had that happen once. I was taking a train home from the city and fell asleep. When we got to my stop, I woke up quick and jumped out before the train started going again... only to find out I got off the train one stop too early.

So it's like 6am after a night of heavy drinking. My car is at the next train station (I was sober by then, no worries) and all I need is a way to take the 5 minute journey from where I am to my car so I can get home. My choices are either to stand there for an hour in the freezing cold in a tshirt or try to get a cab.

Well since the cab companies on Long Island have come up with this ridiculous "zone" idea instead of charging mileage, and since I'd have to cross, I think 2 zones, to get to my car... I got quoted a price of, get this, $32.

So I stood there and froze for an hour, took the train to the next stop for a total of $1.50. They all suck... all of 'em.

Hmm.  That is a problem.  How 'bout the trains?  Probably not one to Wells, but what's the nearest you can get?  The taxi from there might be cheaper.

The busses around Bristol kinda do that zoning thing.  kinda.  It's crap.  It costs a friend of mine the same to go one mile from her house on the outskirts of Bristol to work on the outskirts of Bristol as it does for me to go 6 miles from my house on the outskirts of Bristol to work in the centre of Bristol.
