Controversial Poster

So, it seems that this poster advertising 50 Cent's new album and movie has caused something of a controversy:

50 Cent ad 'glamorised' gun crime

A poster featuring rapper 50 Cent holding a gun and a baby has been criticised for "glamorising" gun crime by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The Get Rich or Die Tryin' advert might be seen as condoning the use of weapons, the industry watchdog ruled.

The ad for his album and film sparked 17 complaints from people saying it was irresponsible or offensive.

17 whole complaints.  Gosh.

Anyways, regardless of your love (or hate) of the genre, lets have one of those lovely controversial discussions about whether we think the poster does in fact glamourise the use of guns.

Personally, I think it gamourises the use of babies.

The use of children in advertising or art offends me...

The use of guns does not...

I'll leave it at that...

A few months ago when this movie was just out here, this poster stirred some controversy because if of the Crusifiction/Jesus reference in his pose

He has a gun in one hand and a microphone in the other.

Neither of these pictures really bother me. Its just a stupid ass trying to stir up crap so more stupid asses go to see his movie.

Iron Maiden produced a song called 'bring your daughter to the slaughter' - they had a skeletal 'eddie' with his brains on show in the picture -

Two comments:

Although I haven't seen the movie, I unfortunately have some idea of what it's about ... which is in a nutshell the guy portrayed in the poster trying to escape his former life of violence through rap.  In other words, the movie is about his choice between guns and microphones/babies ... sort of.  Point is, all the poster does is accurately portray what the movie is about.

Two, the gun and baby thing ... let's be honest with ourselves here ... how often does this happen in reality?  Some thug holding his baby with a gun in his pants.  I'm sure it happens in neighborhood across the country (this country at very least) all the time.  Grow up.

Perhaps I was meant to just say something witty and not take it seriously.  In that case-- Hey, at least he wasn't holding a gun with a baby in his pants.  That would be weird.  And smelly for the poor baby.

Does Bond glamourise gun crime?  Or any Bruce Willis movie ever made?  Or Arnie?  Probably.  And they've all been moaned about too.

I actually think both posters are pretty effective advertising for the movie using simple and fairly evocative imagery.  Gotta say - I probably wouldn't have inferred any religious connotation to the 'crucifiction' one if you hadn't mentioned it Brian.

It's a very shiny gun, though, innit?

I thought this thread was going to be about a member here at the JDBB.

Bond's licensed to kill, dude. No crime involved, mate.
