The following Dodgers have been smited by the JDK for their crimes against Jam:
All the girls! for picking on the JDK and damaging his already delicate self esteem!
The Basserd Who Nicked Copper's Stuff For the offense of nicking Copper's stuff. You are a tw*t, whoever you are and we all hope you get run over by a tram in Nottingham. Or Liverpool. Or whereever else they have trams!
Copper For the crime of playing with her Wii instead of her Jammie pals!
I greeted someone by pointing at them today and was told that i was being inexcusably rude. Now I've always been told that pointing is rude, but without a satisfactory explanation of the implied rudeness, I decline to accept this as fact.
So this post is twofold. Firstly, please vote in the poll above and secondly, explain yourself below.
Carry on.
(Lordy... some people will post about any old rubbish, won't they?)
well, I think this is an universal thing (as we on the continent think it's rude as well).
However, I always thought it is rude because people generally don't like to stand out and with pointing you draw the attention of other people, who might not be involved/ known to somebody, which can elicit embarrassing emotions. Additionally the audience wonders what's up with this person and this curiosity might not be wanted by the person pointed at. So you're creating a negative experience for this person and since we are supposed to be nice to each other, you violate this rule while pointing.
So... by that argument, waving to someone in public is also rude as it draws potentially unwanted attention. I liked the use of the word 'violate' there, however. By pointing at someone, I'm violating them! Mua ha ha ha ha.
But think of situations where someone's pointing: always negative: there runs the thief, he/she did it...seem all more negative to me than waving...especially since it's harder to identify who you are waving to!
this is the whole 'choosing to be offended' thing i think - it's best for the offended (i.e. the pointee) to take what the offender (in this case the pointer) probably meant and go with that..
