Too tall?

How can you possibly get away with telling someone thay are too tall to do a job...  because their legs won't fit under the desk...?

A graduate lost out on his dream job because bosses at an air traffic control centre said he was too tall.

Ben Sargeaunt-Thomson, who is 6ft 10in (2m 8cm) tall was offered a place as a trainee for the National Air Traffic Services (Nats) in Swanwick, Hampshire.

But the offer to the 23-year-old, from Northampton, was later withdrawn because the company thought his 38-inch (0.96m) legs would pose a safety risk.

A tribunal reserved judgment on claims of indirect sexual discrimination.

Seems to me that if he was disabled, say in a wheelchair, they'd make arrangements for him - enure he had proper access and could reach the computer and so on.  How is this different?

I also notice that they tried to get 'em for (indirect) sexual discrimination.  Not quite sure how they came to choose that particular bit of legislation.  I guess it was a best fit, although you could argue that excessive tallness is genetic, so they must be disciminating against his genetic heritage - racial discrimination... or possibly (and apologies to our 9-foot-tall, portsmouth-dwelling dodgers) a disability... to er being short.  Ok, I'm stretching it a bit now.  Hah!  Stretching.  Oh that's good.  I amaze myself sometimes!

Oh absolutely! If he was in a wheelchair it would a completely different story. They would have made every modification necessary for fear of backlash. It would be different if this was a military job where he physically could not fit into say a submarine bunk or a fighter jet. Actually NASA does not (or did not in the past) allow astronauts to be over 6 feet tall because they did not want to have to redesign the flight suit. It would be cheaper just to find another body.

Copper!!!!

I think tall people get discriminated on a daily basis (as get all people who are slightly different): we don't fit the norm...so there are no clothes, cars, furniture ....to fit us. Take small people: how are they supposed to reach the top shelfs in the supermarket?

No sympathy.  Tall people, on average, are more successful.

heh heh heh...

Watch the interplay between the 9 foot lady and the tiny, tiny girl.  It's most entertaining!

Who wants to be average, anyway?  Being the same as everyone else is just boring.

That's disgustingly blatant discrimination!  I'd seen the link on the Beeb site before, but assumed he wanted to be a pilot, planes being a little harder to adjust.  I hope he does so well in his career that in a few years he gets to be boss of the Hampshire lot & make those idiots lives misery!  (I enjoy mixing karma with bitchiness!)
