I was passing through John Lewis yesterday (a big department store, for transatlantic readers) when I saw something that I considered a bit odd.
The escalators had stopped. That wasn't the odd thing. No, the odd thing was that they obviously thought that the concept of a stationary escalator would blow people's minds, because they had a gaggle of staff members at the top and bottom of each escalator telling people how to use it.
As I approached the foot of the escalator a man touched my arm and said 'Be careful on the escalator sir. It's out of order and you'll have to walk up.'
'I know,' I said. 'It'll be just like stairs!'.
