So called Singer Songwriters - bit of rant

Terry Wogan 'discovered' this woman. I have heard many interviews with her where she is asked about how she writes such amazing songs etc and she's always banged on about writing from the heart and personal experience and all that c0ck.

I had never really looked into it in detail but I have to say I'm unsurprised that yet again the talent behind the 'face' turns out to be someone else. Maybe this wasnt a secret - but it certainly wasnt proactively mentioned in interviews etc

When are we going to start celebrating the writing more than the pretty face? it really pi55es me off -

Eva Cassidy was the same - great singer tis true she was, but people believe she wrote fields of gold and I've even heard people say that the sting version wasnt a very good cover !!!!!

The songwriter is king in my view, and should be celebrated more...

Not sure what the rant is about here ... if you look into it even further you'll see she does write many of her own songs, or in colaboration with, and never claimed to write the 2 biggest hits named in the article Remember seeing and interview with her and Batt where he was vilified by a scientist about his reference to our distance from the edge of the universe, which he came back to with "It's just a bloody song" ... i digress. I'm not a fan of hers by the way, but the folks are so I am probably overly familiar with her albums. To be fair though to be a singer/songwriter means you have to sing and write songs, as long as there is one on the album criteria filled imho.

So once someone thought "hey, she's got a good voice" they got songwriters on board to help ...it's nothing new, been happening for 60 years or more and will continue to do so.

There is a lot of tarring with a single brush though if this thin arguement is going to be slapped over all singer/songwriters ... and there are far, far, far worse culprits and then some of the most criticised.

But hey, counter rant over.

Oh and re the Eva Cassidy thing ... you can't account for idiots.

 I know its nothing new - just getting sick of it. Her voice is ok and she's pretty so she gets a record deal. No decent songs? no problem we'll buy them - I just dont like it.

But I do like the monkees.... so that tells you everything.
