Forewords

So I've stolen the idea for this thread directly from another forum as I'm incapable of original though!

Right first up, you may already have heard about this:

Evangelists hand out Darwin books with creationist introduction

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Members of Christian groups handed out copies of the book that first proposed the theory of evolution to students on the Missouri State University campus.

But the copy of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" that many students received included a 50-page introduction from a Christian author who questions the validity of evolution.

The author, Ray Comfort, supports creationism.

Students who gave away about 1,000 copies of the book on Wednesday say it gives people a chance to consider different sides of the controversy over evolution.

Greg Marlin coordinated the Springfield distribution. It was part of a nationwide distribution of 170,000 copies of Darwin's book at universities. Volunteers from several Christian student groups helped with the effort.

So it got me (by which i mean the person who originally came up with the idea) thinking about what completely inappropriate forewords you could put in books. For example (and these are my own):

Dr Spock's Baby and Child Care: The One Essential Parenting Book with a foreword by JonnyStead.

The Complete Meat Cookbook: A Juicy and Authoritative Guide to Selecting, Seasoning, and Cooking Today's Beef, Pork, Lamb, and Veal by by Bruce Aidells (Author), Denis Kelly (Author), Mary Newell DePalma (Illustrator). With a new foreword by Sha76jam.

The Essential Guide to Videogames by Future Magazines with a foreword by Truckman.

Your turn! Feel free to include excerpts from your forewords!

That one may just have to be a group effort!

There is only one side to Fact - thats the fact side and evolution is fact. Its not a bloody theory - its fact ! God, its one of the few things that I despise about the US (and I'm a supporter overall) is the whole reliance on imaginary friends thing...

Hey who - how about

Making Friends: A Guide to Getting Along with People (Paperback) with a foreword by Adolf Hitler

Hey hey! Let's not be lumping all of us in that group! There are some of us in the US that think those people are... let's say 'off'... too.

I always understood that despite being a Jew hating homicidal maniac, Hitler was actually a very charismatic persuasive man who had no problem persuading people to follow him in his Jew hating homicidal maniacalness. Also he made the trains run on time.

Ahem. Evolution IS a theory, as is most of science. As it is not fully understood & certainly not proven (I'm talking the full process of cordate evolution here, which I'm assuming is what most people are thinking of?) it can hardly be anything but.

Evolution is accepted fact - Humans evolved from less evolved beings - thats just the way it is.

Now, exactly, how that happens - thats mostly genetic mutation / natural selection and the mutation bit might not be fully understood from a physiological stand point but the fact that it happens and thats why we are here as humans - thats gone beyond the theory stage. The theory has been proven to be true.

I suppose you could say, its only a theory that the sky is blue :)

Ah, good to see you're up for a reasoned arguement!  Accepted fact is certainly not science & no, evolutionary theory has not been proved (parts, yes, the whole, no).

Heh. I like how this thread has gone from teh funnehs to Shaz and Stead arguing again.

For my twopence worth, Tim Minchin said it best in 'Storm' (It's actually about homeopathy, but the principle is the same):

Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved.

Evolution is still a theory and science will adjust it's views on how it works as it observes new stuff. Science itself doesn't have an ego, so it's capable of acknowledging that it got stuff wrong - some of Darwin's theories in his book have since been disproved or adjusted based on facts that became available after he wrote it, and I'm sure he'd be fine with that! We'll definitely make more adjustments to the theory as time goes on.

Ultimately, the only way to prove the theory is to observe species over millions of years, which just ain't gonna happen - and science accepts that. Creationists on the other hand can't accept that science accepts it and make stuff up. Twats.
