Headphones

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8279348.stm

Some of you - if you use headphones alot - may find this useful

Those of you who have worked in the studio with me, will know that I dont like headphones and only use them when its absolutely necessary (takes requiring a microphone where other monitoring devices could be picked up).

Its worth noting that ears have a 'gain control' that reduces their sensitivity during the day as they get 'tired' but this does not protect them from damage. So turning up the volume during the day or to compensate for outside noise can result, very quickly in permanent damage - so do be careful ! :)

I do although I've moved away from "in ear" designs and they have to have noise cancelling on them, that means I can keep the volume sensible and not need to "drown out" external noise.

Downside is when the light broke on my phone I had no idea it was ringing :)

Protect yer ears folks!

Interestingly the levels they suggest are a bit stupid. 80 dB is, alledgedly, a car 25 feet away and 89 dB is a motorbike 30 feet away. Not actually that loud ... although irritating when you're trying to sleep :) Does suggest that being a motorcycle courier will make you deaf :)

I haven't used headphones for listening to music in a long time...My gradually worsening tinnitus doesn't let me appreciate high notes anyway...Tinnitus began for me by working under F105's and F4's while they were running on the ready pads...I was loading armament and changing missile launchers while the aircraft crew chief was running the engines up to 105% as part of the pre-flight checks...

I rarely used more than earplugs in those days and the situation wasn't helped by forty years oif shooting guns since then...Yes, proptect your ears, they are a one-time issue...Ben
