Well, my recollection is that the hear shape was always there, and the design of the biscuity bit was somewhat more elaborate.  During my 30 seconds of searching, I was unable to locate an image of a historical JD for comparison, but the true authority on biscuits seems to back me up.

Are you thinking of the similar biscuits that you used to get in selection packs, with a round hole and a radiating spoke pattern on the biscuit.  I seem to recall a light dusting of sugar on those, too.
