the opium allowed the working classes in order to prevent revolution and anarchy?
or
a fine victory for human welfare and the social order?
day 1 is today: feel good and well with the world sun is shining, got plans (well sort of, going to 'parentcraft' classes - gulp) and generally feeling tops!
(oops, just realised am not actually on annual leave, on my second week of paternity leave - wow thats like 'free' holiday, except you (well my wife) has to have a baby.
Does that inlcude public holidays, then? Cos if it does, I have to add 7 or 8 extra days for bank holidays, Easter and Christmas. (Plus 3 Jealousy days per year, 52 Mondays and 12 1st of the Months.)
I get 25 as standard, plus 8? bank holidays, plus 2 1/2 'privilege' days (some weird ex-civil service hangover thingy.
In addition another 2 weeks (10 days) this year cos of the baby - all in all 45 1/2 days paid when I don't have to be at work - not bad really, when you add it all up

No kidding, maybe when America is as old as England we will have figured out to create 30 some-odd holidays to get out of work. I only get 10 Holidays + 10 Vacation days/year. There is also 10 days of sick time/year but it is not as easy to take. I think there may be a translation mishap in reading this, I guess you UK'ers refer to any day off as a Holiday?
I get 34 days holiday a year plus four stat holidays at Christmas and New year, that's because I don't get public holidays. The joys of working in the Media

In theory, I get 6 paid holidays, 1 week vacation, 2 sick days and 2 personal days.
15 days total.
Of which, I can guarantee I'll have to work every holiday, probably both my sick days and at least one of my personal days.... and the weeks vacation will be taken away if we have another crap hurricane this year.

Move to England, dudettes. Lotsa spare holidays floating around here. They actually brred them in huge holiday farms. There's so many, we don't know what to do with them. Someone suggested exporting them to France.
Don't think I haven't tried. Fell in love when I was there two years ago - almost didn't leave. But there are those pesky immigration laws to think about..
OK, so I need an American to explain some stuff to me:
I thought vacation was American for holiday, so howcome you get both?
What's all this allocated sick day business? I mean either you're too sick to go to work, or you're not. I mean, what happens if you're in hospital with double pneumonia & your sick leave runs out? Do they wheel you to work on your hospital bed?
(27 + 2.5 carried over from last year + 8 bank holidays)
Basically I could stay there for a while - but I woudln't be able to get a job - unless I was able to show that I had skills that were not available by locals. Since all I'm really good at is umm well sitting here - I don't think there's room for me over there.
"[Work] Permits must normally be obtained before an individual travels to Britain. Individuals cannot apply for permits. The prospective employer in Britain must apply because he or she has a specific vacancy and cnanot fill it with a British or EEA National. Permits are issued only for jobs requiring a high level of skill, qualifcations and/or experience."
Er... how do you explain the 350000 immigrants we let in every year then. And the 700000 a year that sneak in under the radar. One more ain't gonna make a difference.
Holidays are federal holidays... christmas, new years, thanksgiving, etc.
Vacation time is usually between 1 and 2 weeks that you can take with pay (with a lot of advance notice) to do with whatever you please...
Sick days are usually 2 or 3 days per year that you can call in sick and still get paid. If you are in the hospital with double pneumonia then you'll use up your two sick days and any remaining vacation days... anything beyond that and you don't get paid for it.
Personal days are days where youre not sick, but something has come up you need to take care of... like a doctor's visit or something. Not as much notice required as vacation time, but unlike sick days you can use them in halves.

Holidays are basically Christmas, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and a hand ful of others. Some places give you off on days like Presidents day, but some dont.
Vacation days are just whatever you want to do with them days. You can go somewhere or not.
Sick days - you get a certain amount of sick days.. if you run out of them and you're still sick.. well then you don't get paid for those days. You usually get paid for the sick days you have.
Get yourself to France and I'm sure someone could arrange a big white van and a man that won't ask any questions. You could hide behind his mountain of knockoff fags and cheap booze.
