As someone who used to be one of them (and still probably would be if Florida weren't too darn hot to wear black), I can tell you I (along with my group) weren't so much against conformity as we were (and I still am) against authority.
As for the attire, I think I found it to be more of a power trip than anything. Wear a black dress, a bondage collar and combat boots and you pretty much get instant respect just because people don't know what to make of you. It's quite nice actually.
Now, for the music, I've actually found goths as a group to be rather accepting of different music types. Yeah there are the pretentious ones (and those are the ones who b*tch the most, so they are usually what people use to base their opinions) who deem certain music "not goth enough", but the ones I hung out with listened to everything from industrial to 60's folk. Every see a goth rockin' out to Arlo Guthrie? Funny sight.
So *shrug* I guess I can't tell you. That's never been my experience with it.
hm.... last time i cheaked Neds love to kick the crap outa Goths... and vice versa :P Oh the joys oh wondering around glasow. I personaly find Neds really annoying because they leave broken glass around the places i like to climb in glasgow.. its kinda dangerous if you ask me.
Stead is a goth? *giggles* i want piccies! He sings really nicely and dosnt sound very gothy..
I remeber hanging out at this goth club in glasgow.. when i was wee, it was called 'the cat house'. a fun place! I even got a bar staff t-shirt from there.. hm.. not saying how i got it though i wonder if its still open.....

Being gothy has changed alot since I hanged about that group i think... they are becoming alot more um... unacepting? For example if you go into a goth chat room these days you get banned if you dont use black text.. or if you say you like some non-gothy rock band. Its kinda sad if you ask me. I totaly agree with Andromeda.. myself and all my friends when i was in that group loved alot of different types of music and we didnt all just wear black. As being goth becomes more mainstream i think more people use it as an excuse to be violent, and group together in rather pointless factions. Most groups of this type now i days i dont really see as any differnt then neds or any other group. They pick fights with other groups, only lisen to there own type of music and genrally think they are better then the other groups. Its like Mod's and Rockers all over again...
