Curious about your opinion - the octuplets mom

For anyone not familiar with the story :

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29125355/

I'm in disagreement with a mom friend of mine for your side of the pond  who seems to think that the backlash against this mother is an American thing, and people on the other side of the world wouldn't mind the situation.  She contends that any tax money spent on this woman and her children are a drop in the bucket when you look at the whole country, so why are we all up in arms about it?

I'm curious as to what your thoughts are (although I'm pretty sure I already know) ;)

That seems to be an article about her resemblence to Angeline Jolie. Did you mean to link to this one: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29110391/

We certainly have a problem here in the UK with people becoming baby factories so that they don't ever have to go to work - they usually start young and never actually contribute a penny to the state, yet can make as much in a year as I do when you factor in the free housing, child benefit, family tax credit, some form of disability benefit for the slight limp...

You'd think that someone who already had 6 kids would be desperate not to get up the duff again. Maybe there's an optimum number of kids you need to have to make the most money from the state. Anyone fancy doing some calculations?

There was a time here in Texas when unmarried women entered the welfare hospital for their second delivery of yet another drain on the public bank account and they left sterilized...The doctors did it as part of the delivery and just didn't tell anyone...What ever happened to those days?...Ben

Right or wrong, I know it was common practice in the fifties and early sixties in Dallas and Houston...If the truth were known, it was probably done around the world to some extent...Society can only assume the burden of raising a limited number of children to adulthood...At some point quanity exceeds quality and all suffer beyond that...Ben

My view is simple - pay your own way. If you want kids - you have to pay for them. If not... well there's always the canal...

The canal's a bit harsh; can we not just bring back the workhouse?

I read that an illegal number of embryos were implanted during IVF, but why on earth was she allowed IVF in the first place?

That's being called into question and the doctor that performed the procedure is under ethics investigation, if I remember correctly.
