Social Security has been in place since the thirties, Jon...It's certainly not a freebie as we pay into it all our lives...I've put in a mandatory percentage of my pay for 43 years and when I decided to retire last year I had to make a decision whether or not to apply for benefits...
By waiting until I'm 66, I could have received more money per month but taking it now means a 25% reduction in payments...My health is not very good and since I don't expect to live that much longer, I figured I'm better off to get what I can now...I know I'll never get back what I put into the system but something is better than nothing...
It's not enough to live on even for someone with limited expenses like me...It's about enough to cover my house payment and utilities and that certainly helps...Ben
