This year we were told that the arctic would be ice free due to global warming:

It's quite a different pattern, isn't it! Where did it come from?

As I understood it (and I haven't read your links yet), they were still expecting there to be some ice cover in the arctic, probably even enough for the polar bears, but considerably less of the really thick permanent ice that makes the stable ice cap up there.

Not sure about that but they were predicting a complete ice melt this year.
