Arrrrgghhhhhh! Need to vent!

Am on a diet & it's making me want to kill people teeth.  I may start knawing on my desk soon; anyone know how many calories there are in desks?

At least twelve. It depends on whether it's a wooden desk, plastic one or a metal one.

I am also on kind've a diet. I'm cutting back on carbs and doing a bit of cardio so that I can have a lovely six pack to complement my big arms in the summer! Can't say it's driving me crazy, yet...

See, I've tried the "just cutting back on this" & "just having a little less of that" approaches & can't say I've ever really got anywhere, which is why I decided it's time to do it properly.
You do realise you'll need to do weights to get a 6 pack? It won't just be there, hidden under the fat.

You're talking to a guy who can bench his own body weight with no problem - weights... he does. A six pack though is pretty easy to get - sit ups / crunches and other 'core work' brings them on quickly enough - to really make them show you have to get your BMI right down - and thats what he's training for after spending the winter building muscle.

If you want a good diet - message me with your goals and I will draw one up for you - the JDK and I can pretty much control our body weight within a 1% margin at anytime these days. wink

Stead sticking up for the JDK's physique? Truly an historic moment!

Cheers for the offer but other than the odd homicidal bout I'm doing quite well on Tesco's online one, plenty of recipes, even for an easily bored veggie!

Excuse me, Shaz. Do you mind if I borrow your venting thread?

jdkcross

My twat of an older brother just bounced a £100 cheque on his little brother. Not me. That would annoy the hell out of me, but my younger brother (there are three of us - I'm the middle one) which annoys me even more.

My little bro is a nurse and as such gets paid peanuts and can ill afford to be £100 out of pocket. Even so, he arranged the purchase of our mum's 60th birthday present (the tortoise) which cost him a grand total of £400 all in on the understanding that me, the big brother and our dad would give him £100 each. So I transferred my portion to him straight away, which I thought was only fair. My dad gave him cash at the party and my older brother gave him a cheque. Which he bounced! *

Now, if it were anyone else, I'd just chalk it up to a mistake on his part and get another cheque out of him. But we're talking about my older brother, here, who has a history of twattish behaviour. He's done the same thing to my parents untold times over the last decade and a half with the full knowledge that the cheques would bounce. He's even boasted about it on a number of occasions.

He is a twat. And an arsehole.

Thanks, I'm finished now. You may go back to your regular scheduled venting!

He sucks - can I join his forum and call him a twat? maybe we should all join via alter egos and start giving him shit...

I feel the evil welling up inside me...

Heh. I made some further enquiries. It seems that the cheque bounced beacuse he closed the account. He only gave Nursey the cheque a week and half ago.

eek, I don't have any brothers, and my sister isn't a cheque-bouncer - so I can't really comment BUT I love that your brother is a nurse, it's like he's a hero

Also, Sharon, I have been dieting since November.. well.. from November to about January I lost 20 lbs then proceeded to not lose the remaining 10 that I wanted to shift and still haven't.. Actually, to make matters worse, I came back to America - having been here for a week and a half, eaten all the terrible things in the world and done no exercise.. that 20lb total is now only 17 :( shame!

Maybe you could send you're older brother over to me on one of my homicidal days? It would help 2 rants in one move! I can't predict them, so he'll hav to get up here pretty sharpish.

Katie, I'm sure I've heard that if you have a bit of a break from the dieting & then go back that it kind of kick starts the fat loss again. Also, are you sure your scales on either side of the Atlantic give the same reading?

He is quite heroic. My little bro is a top bloke and really quite ace.

He does have a ladies job, though.

This is an excellent plan. I'll send him up immediately. You'll recognise him easily enough - he'll be the bloke that looks like a big c*ck!

(ahem... sorry... I'm still a bit pissy about it! jdkcross

Hmmm, I'd have said an office job is way more girly than nursing!

No, no, don't send him yet, I've been in a fabulous mood all day.  I might end up doing something dreadful, like making him a cup of tea or something.

I think you'll find that traditionally, offices are a male dominated environment. Unlike nursing which historically has always been a female role.

You work in an office and you're very manly, which proves my point conclusively and unarguably! nod.gif

Let's not dwell on petty points, like you being wrong. As we have never met I shall take into account the fact that Stead frequently calls you a girl, therefore proving my point far more strongly than you did yours.

It would seem counter-productive on the basis that it's clearly not the case. You forgot to take into account that my previous post...

Which means it simply cannot be refuted.

Oh and...
sha76jam wrote:

It's clearly the diet speaking.

And in case you decide to come back with some other clap-trap that you think might in some way lessen the rightness of everything I said, I would like to add the following statement:

'So's your face!'.

That should cover it!

OK lets be clear -

the JDK is king of the pedants and is petty to the max - he also almost never right (and also NEVER apologises for anything - instead always tries to explain why he wasnt really wrong in some 'other' way) - I've got used to it over the years yet I still want to punch him repeatedly all the time.... so maybe not.

Nursing is less of a girls job than being in an office and the proof is simple. How many activities in an office would make a grown man pass out? If someone handed you someone else spleen to hold - or asked you to clear up a bottom explosion, it wouldnt feel so girly!

Nurses (including the male ones) are though a bunch of little girls when it comes to dealing with their employers - with all that "we cant strike because its not fair on the patients" cobblers - resulting in them having sh1t pay and conditions for years because the government knows they can walk all over them.

Here endith your lessons for today....

Golly. Where to start...

JonnyStead wrote:

Presumably your grasp of basic physics (Battery Boy), the English language ('Endith'? what sort of word is that. Oh that's right - a mis-spelled one!) or basic facts (Pandora is definitely screwed, is it?) is a testament to your own rightness?

Don't fall into the trap of mistaking yourself for a grown man here, Stead. These things might make you pass out (after all, you get queasy if someone mentions poo or lets rip with a smelly guff), but I've had to deal with some pretty grim stuff in previous jobs, including the aforementioned 'bottom explosion' and had no more dramatic reaction than to be somewhat disgusted and a bit pissed off.

You really are rubbish. Try harder next time. nod.gif

Your time working in a theme park hardly counts monkey boy - you'll be saying next you've worked as fireman because you once blew out a candle. Really you dont want to get into who's had the more testing jobs in the past with me ;)

Additionally I dont have time to always check and check and check spelling and grammar on a forum designed to kill a moment of boredom, because I have a job that requires my attention during the day - do you? and before you answer, remember I've seen you at work.

The Pandora SUGGESTION was based on good sources

http://news.google.co.uk/news?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=pandora%20closed&oe=ISO-8859-1&um=1&sa=N&tab=wn

Oh and MY boss isnt disappointed in me... is he...?

And I didnt even have to try....

Just to claim back my thread here (sorry & all that):

So, here I am, happily not eating away, meeting or even exceding my weightloss targets (& bear in mind that everything I've ever read on the matter says it's bad to lose more than 1-2lbs a week & I've been losing 2-3) & how do Tesco reward me?  They LOWER my calorie allowance.
I email them to question this & beg for it to return & here is their response:

"Your calorie allowance is dropped each time you lose weight to prevent the weight from going back on again.
You should still be losing weight at a rate of 1-2lbs per week."

Please, if anyone understands this logic then would they kindly explain it to me?

This is the way my one did it too - apparently your body becomes used to the calorie amount and slows down burning as much so you have to reduce it again to combat that

That's where I stumbled.. I reduced.. didn't lose any more.. put it back up - didn't change - BAH!

Its a theory - I have to say though I am massively concerned about the approach of the tesco diet and diets in general. Here's why -

Your body is a machine muscle burns calories whether you use it or not and a calorie will only go as far as a calorie will go. For dieticians to say that the body becomes more efficient is frankly nonsense all thats happening here is that the starvation of your body is causing you to lose muscle as well as fat. This means that you muscles dont burn as many calories as they used to but they are also less capable of performing their day to day tasks as they get smaller. So you get weaker.

Once the diet is over your body will need less calories (because it will be functioning at a less productive level due to the smaller muscles) and if you then increase your food intake the excess will be stored as fat.

Fat is stored in little pockets around the body and once new pockets have been created (by putting on weight as fat) they NEVER go away. The most you can hope to do is keep them empty by living a healthy lifestyle. This is why people notice how easy it is to pile the pounds back on after a diet. They are refilling the little pockets which is easy.

I urge you strongly to just eat a diet of Lean Protein (skimmed milk, chicken, fish etc- which will enable you to keep muscle) and good carbs (fruit, veg, etc) and stay away from the complex carbs such as Pasta, rice and spuds and increase your exercise.

Trust me on this (Ive been doing this for years now) you can control your weight to the pound if you manage what you eat and balance it with exercise. Diets do not work long term. They simply dont.

Sorry to rant but I wanted to help you avoid doing long term damage that could demoralise you. Good luck!

I'd like to point out - and I'm not positive about the Tesco one but I would guess that this is just an 'on paper' way of mangaing what you eat - FYI, I'm stronger and fitter since starting to watch my calories.. and oh, exercising, which is what they suggested too - genius!

(PS the particular 'life style change' that I followed concentrated on those lean protein foods you mentioned, although did not make life miserable by completely cutting out what you would refer to as 'bad carbs', just greatly reduced portions of them)

I did reply questioning their logic - no response yet.

I'm putting on noticable muscle from running, so don't seem to be starving my body just yet. However, if I went down to the stupidly low 1400 calories they suggest then I'm sure it would start to be detrimental, I also wouldn't have enough energy to put any effort into exercise, so it'd probably slow the rate of weight loss.

Generally I'm not in favour of diets, but having had a most crappy winter due to asthma I want to have got down to a sensible weight & then established a proper healthy diet before the temperature starts dropping, that means a pretty determined effort to lose the numerous packets of biscuits I consumed!

Not convinced on getting rid of carbs, but am going for smaller amounts of higher GI ones.

Fair enough - as there wasnt any mention of exercise until I talked about it - I assumed you guys were dieting only.

I just wanted to clarify on carbs - I didnt say get rid of carbs- I said switch to 'good carbs' like veggies and fruit and stay away from pasta, rice and spuds. From a calorific excess point of view, for the purposes of losing weight (your goals) they are absolutely bad carbs. Cutting them out wont make you miserable I promise - no carbs at all leading to protein poisoning will make you miserble but losing the spuds? nah.

Anywho - good luck!
