Superman Returns

I finally got a chance to see this.

I tried, I did.  I sat down with an open mind wanting to enjoy the spectacle, hoping above hope that they had managed something amazing.  Especially with Singers involvement ... he did so much for the first 2 X-Men movies that I had high hopes.

What a dissappointment.  A series of set pieces connected by the most tenuous, tedious and down right stupid plot lines in the history of ever.  Brenden Routh turned in a performance that is frequently shown up by the cast of Hollyoaks, Kevin Spacey was wasted and Lex was written as a complete idiot.  The set pieces were mostly uninspiring and absolutely no effort at backstory was attempted, so the happenings between II and this (I know they ignored II and IV) were just blurted out and left at that.

Oh, and he's got a son now has he?  Blimey, there's a shocker ... and implausible ... I refer you to Clerks II and the "only wonder woman could take his load" ... but that's a needless digression.

Superman has never been my favourite hero, he has his powers because he's an alien ... there is no real turmoil, or at least none shown with any level of skill and as he's basically unkillable (yes, I know, Kryptonite but that never really seems to have much effect and how much of the stuff is there?  really?) ... but I expected more from a crew of this merit and pedegree.

Ah well, Spiderman III in a fortnight.

It had it's problems and could certainly have been better, but it did the job for me. How can you dislike a movie where Kevin Spacey rolls the 'R' in the word 'Kryptonite' for such an unfeasibly long time! I'm looking forward to the next one!

Spidey 3... should be good. The last two were. Pirates 3... again has the potential to be good - the second one was missing the magic of the first one somewhat, but was till pretty good.

Now Clerks 2. There's a great movie!

I must disagree. While the movie itself won't enter the history books as a twenty first century epic, I certainly imagine it will be remembered by most as a feel-good, true to comic-strip form movie that left many of its audience with a happy smiley feeling.

I think Kevin Spacey was an unusual yet clever choice for Lex and he executed his role well, Brandon Routh was most likely picked because of his striking resemblance to a young Christopher Reeve, nevertheless his acting was quite alright - in fact, when he caught the plane on its way to the home base, I almost cheered.

Here's to a bit of escapism, true to the original comic albeit slightly cheesy - it did its job for me.

Oh and don't we have many other Superman movies to fill in the back story for us? You do mention them but had the director laboured over that point, as you suggest he should, I imagine the critics would have been more harsh than your good self. We all know Superman, we just want to see him save the world (again).

Yeah, there are the other movies but they don't cover any of the five year gap mentioned in the movie.

Spacey was wasted, he played the role as best, possibly better, than anyone would have but it seemed too ... er ... nothing, as the character.

Meh, ignore me, I'm just a grumpy basket at the best of times.  I was really hoping this would spark my interest in Superman but I just think that's one hero that's wasted on me.  My loss I suppose.

Its a tricky one - re-igniting a franchise after 30 years - making the original fans go bleary eyed and still making it easy enough to follow for the new fans, with a new set of actors - phew not easy.

For me, I was really impressed and it 'did it' for me but I know your not a Supes fan to start with H so that wont have helped.

Wait for the 2nd one - its gonna be all Wrath of Khan apparantley -
